I have been working at University of Cambridge as a contractor

    Pros

Brilliant academic environment working with some of the brightest people I know. Very relaxed and flexible hours (no experiments for me). Opportunities to forge your own path are easy to create. Cambrigde as a location is great too.

    Cons

Standard issues with postdoc-ing aside, Cambridge is not that well paid compared to other unis and when you factor in cost of living it can be pretty tough getting by financially. Compared with other universities and research institutes that I've worked at the management practices here are fairly poor (but what do expect if your line manager is an academic with no management training/experience?)

    Advice to Management

    Modernise.

I have been working at University of Cambridge full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Multidisciplinary research environment, which makes it easy to collaborate or get research-related feedback. A lot of great researchers all around. Plenty of pharmaceutical and biotech companies in the region for collaboration on career progression.

    Cons

Very competitive environment in terms of long term job stability - candidates moving from outside of Cambridge area are favoured. Some level of bureaucracy.

    Advice to Management

Restrict size of research groups in order to increase output per person rather than measuring in absolute terms. This would promote quality over quantity and should provide career benefits for human capital.

    Pros

This is a very stimulating environment. The research is pretty advanced and colleagues/administrations are usually very friendly and helpful.

Working with people from very diverse background/origins.

    Cons

Although the research done is very advanced, the facilities are sometimes quite old.

Parking is very difficult, and the university does not facilitate that.

I have been working at University of Cambridge full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Smart people, established institute, high influx of hard working students.

    Cons

Too many people with big egos. Most not as smart as they woud like to think themselves. Salary is an insult to worth. Little to no collaboration.

    Advice to Management

Not much you can do with an institute this old and inert.

I have been working at University of Cambridge full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Great brand name
Great potential for professional growth - endless courses available covering almost any subject you can imagine
People are ambitious, intelligent, passionate, talented, and willing to collaborate

    Cons

Cons are largely depend on the lab you're working for! There are no standard expectations for a postdoc's working conditions
Postdocs are not part of the College system, which is a huge part of University life
Long hours for little pay (the cost of living in Cambridge is very high)
    Little opportunity for career advancement

    Advice to Management

Integrate postdocs into the College system
Look out for your postdocs - make sure they are aware of the opportunities for advancement and that they can take advantage of these
Have better systems in place for evaluating Principal Investigators and providing minimum employment standards
