I worked at University of Derby UK full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

-Good public facilities -community atmosphere -annual leave entitlement

    Cons

-Resources and staff office space/environment complete opposite of the public outfacing facilities. -The ‘Strategic Framework’ is totally unrelatable to the average worker and the online induction courses felt like an indoctrination. -Internal processes with several lines of approval hold up work that needs to be done leading a simple task needing crisis management to complete for an unrealistic deadline. - Increasing workload without the potential for a decent increase in pay. -Almost always in some form of restructuring with a feeling of uncertainty and difficulty to do the job. -Senior leaders are intimidating -High turnover of staff with many agency workers filling in the gaps

I have been working at University of Derby UK full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    - Not much! Some good people

    Cons

    - Deluded and incompetent Senior Management who are focussed on their own careers and self importance. Many also try to manage by fear and thus alienate those working in their area but wonder why engagement is so low - genuinely clueless! - Shambolic and completely unrealistic approach to longer term strategy. The ‘Strategic Framework’ and associated compulsory indoctrination courses are woeful and embarrassing - Internal processes (ordering goods, recruiting etc) largely not fit for purpose and impede on ability to do job - Increasing workload without potential for decent increase in reward/recognition - Many academics are trapped and want to leave but can’t due to family, location, state of HE generally etc - Almost constantly under some form of reorganisation meaning nothing gets embedded before it’s changed again. Such flux means difficult to do job - Not exclusive to this institution, but likely future devaluing of pension provision due to escalating costs - If you have any research ambitions, this is NOT the institution for you!

I have been working at University of Derby UK full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

    Colleagues are friendly and helpful

    Cons

Management hasn't got a clue - over work staff, and completely fill teaching hours leaving no room for research Poor career opportunities Anyone senior is hired in from outside (usually someone the management has worked with before)

I worked at University of Derby UK full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

No longer exist in current environment.

    Cons

I enjoyed my time working at the University (28 Years), however, the best decision I ever made was to move on (no choice in the matter as it happens). I feel sorry for the staff that are currently left at this place. Recently advertised post for 50 plus new staff in Admin would be for the staff that took Voluntary redundancy, this consisted of quite a few staff that had been at the university for a number of years. I suspect that, like myself there was not a lot of choice for them as the uni needed younger staff to mould into their toxic work environment. Lip service paid to stress in the work place, values and behaviors twisted to suit management needs at the time, staff penalized for not being 100% commited (forget your social life). Current Exec has got rid of all original exec members (there one day, gone the next). All managers have their own version of the University’s agenda, lots of bullying going on at all levels. I’m glad I worked at the University when it was a pleasant place to work. Avoid this place at all costs...

I have been working at University of Derby UK full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

People in the team really try their hardest in difficult situations.

    Cons

The pressure and workload for staff on the ground is just unbearable. More work is poured on with less people to do it, There are new senior appointments permanently but never anyone to do the work. There is no trust from Managers. Nothing anyone does is ever considered good enough.
