I worked at University of Edinburgh full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The school of informatics has been ranked the best in the UK. There are noble prize winners in the university. The staff and also people in the city are welcoming. The quality of life is high compared to London.

    Cons

The weather is usually chilly with rare sunshines. Flying from Edinburgh is not as good as flights from London of course.

I worked at University of Edinburgh full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Working at the IGMM at the University of Edinburgh has been a fulfilling experience. It is a great institute for a researcher, with its state of art technologies, amazing technical services and people happy to collaborate.

    Cons

As in other academic environments, it is very difficult to end up in a permanent position.
The location of the institute is a bit isolated.

    Advice to Management

It is important to keep improving the collaboration between groups and to organize a strong bioinformatic team that can support the researchers working in the labs.

I worked at University of Edinburgh full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very multidisciplinary and stimulating work environment. People are friendly and collaborative. Nice campus close the city centre. Very good and well deserved reputation.

    Cons

Career opportunity are limited. The Institution doesn't support enough young investigator. Work-life balance sometimes too inclined over work. No benefits, bonuses and pension scheme getting worse and worse.

    Advice to Management

I would recommend to improve benefits scheme and HR management. The University is too close in its own world and often it doesn't really take action in response to exterior stimuli. Better PI management and evaluation.
