I have been working at University of Edinburgh as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

I had to teach a short-course (20h); the maximum number of students the class may have is 15, which is a very good number. The staff is extremely professional and willing to help you. It’s an ideal place to work in.

    Cons

You are supposed to prepare one hour lesson in one hour (that’s how much you will be paid for). Similarly, to correct an essay, you will be paid one hour. This is not enough – the only con of my experience.

    Advice to Management

Pay more the time a tutor needs to prepare the lesson and to mark the exam.

I have been working at University of Edinburgh as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Decent part time role while doing a PhD with some relevant career experience.

    Cons

Since you are not really teaching, you get very limited practical work experience in higher education. Training is practically non-existent and they limit paid hours but you often put in more time than you are paid for anyway.

    Advice to Management

Better training, more practical experience for work in higher education environment that can build CV.

I have been working at University of Edinburgh part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Very well paid position for the amount of work necessary, good to get some extra money while studying. Also offers two-hour biweekly courses to improve teaching skills, paid at standard rate.

    Cons

Sometimes the organisation of courses is slightly shaky from what I heard, but this wasn't the case for the course I was studying, where the lecturer was fantastic.

    Advice to Management

Take better care when selecting people as tutors. For some tutors there are persistent complaints coming from students but not actions seems to be taken.
