I worked at University of Glasgow full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I worked with some lovely people and the university has a great environment. The students are fab and the administrative staff are brilliant.

    Cons

The management and treatment of employees is appalling. I was left unemployed as a result of pregnancy because of loop holes in my contract. I was told by my line manager that had I not been pregnant my contract would have been renewed. This is sex discrimination but nobody at UoG cared.

    Advice to Management

Try treating employees as human beings instead of robots in a production line

I have been working at University of Glasgow part-time

    Pros

They really treat their employees like they are important and they are very organized, at least within my department they are.

    Cons

    No cons, love my job!

I worked at University of Glasgow (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Salary was good, the work was interesting, and I had a high degree of flexibility over working hours.

    Cons

You aren't really valued as an individual, and they are very slow to respond to problems.

I worked at University of Glasgow full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The campus is very pretty and access to lovely shops in Glasgows trendy west end make lunch hours very pleasant. The buildings around campus a steeped in history which is nice to look at and the gardens around campus are highly manicured.

    Cons

Most people I worked with were great however due to the structure of an ancient instuition, the management style is very structured and some departments prefer not to stray from their 'in the box' responsibiliites which can prove very frustrating. The managment duo I worked with were very difficult and inflexible to change.

I have been working at University of Glasgow full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

A comfortable city with plenty of amenities. The university has a great history and atmosphere. The research done here has good potential and the fabrication labs are fantastic.

    Cons

Weather is a bit dull. University facilities are old and need to upgraded to make the work environment more modern. Car access is problematic and salaries may not be competitive enough anymore.

    Advice to Management

Increase salaries and quality of work facilities

I have been working at University of Glasgow full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

It's a university, and I am a research associate hired under a professor's grant. This professor happens to be great so my job is great.
    Learning tons on the job
    Great lab mates,
Fell like a valued member of the team

    Cons

Like most positions of this kind it is contingent on funding and so when the funding ends so does my job. This is likely the main reason I will leave academia for industry.

    Pros

Well-equipped for molecular biology related work.
    Sequencing facility is in-house.
Bioinformatics unit is well integrated into the institute.

    Cons

Remote location, not to many contacts with the main campus research groups.
    HSE mismanagement issues.
    Career track is unclear.

    Advice to Management

Resolve the issues regarding the HSE people, who cannot make decisions. Thus, lots of time goes to waste, which is very bad for the grants.
