    Advice to Management

Keep it up - create routes for progression - no point in having dedicated staff who can’t progress

    Negative Outlook

I worked at University of Huddersfield part-time

    Pros

80% off the employees are amazing people, and work together to make sure students get the best possible experiences! Student staff work incredibly hard, yet are completely undervalued and undermined.

    Cons

Projects are mismanaged, those in management positions are completely out of touch with what students actually want (how many 30-somethings share the same interests as 18 year olds). The SU seems to have an inability to look beyond their own egos to create long term projects that will benefit students, crazy focus on one week of the year which blows the budgets when in the long run it doesn’t impact student experience. Additionally, there is a culture of sweeping sexual harassment under the rug after previous cases where staff members were removed from their positions. Clearly an organisation very much aligned with the outdated University approach to sexual harassment instead of ‘fighting for student rights’.

    Advice to Management

Students don’t care about gimmicky freshers week activities or bar crawls! They need holistic support from the SU even when they’re not on campus, students mental health doesn’t suffer when they miss a bar crawl, it suffers when organisations are blind to the areas where they NEED support! The students union has the ability (like bigger unions in Leeds or Manchester) to work with students off campus to improve wellbeing and build strong communities. Stop playing preference with staff, it’s totally unfair to have such a school ground attitude amongst management where friendships are valued higher than professional relationships and work ethics.
