Part-time student employees: avoid like the plague

      Pros

Pay rate is good, and hours are usually flexible (depending on the role).

      Cons

While the rates are good, most of these jobs are zero-hour contracts. I honestly recommend staying away. I get zero to three hours of work. PER MONTH! If you do get a job, expect it to disappear at any time; I had a job with better hours and rate and learnt after coming back from a summer holiday that my job didn't exist as a paid position anymore. I had to effectively take a huge pay cut, making it impossible to support myself in any capacity with just this income. I'm not the only one who has had their job go away in the past few years, either. Many student jobs were axed when the students union moved and the bar closed!! If you do apply, go for one of the jobs with more stable hours, even if they're a lower rate. Aside from this, the university suffers from problems a lot of big corporates do: part-time student staff are treated as replaceable robots instead of humans. You have been warned. This isn't necessarily true for every manager mind you; if you work within your own school, you may be fine in that aspect.

My contract was 'lapsed' then renewed

      Pros

      Paid on time, paperwork correct.

      Cons

I was in a pool of part time lecturers. I found that my contract was allowed to lapse and be immediately renewed while I was working for them. I understand this avoided a pay increment among other rights.
