I have been working at University of Manchester full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great well equipped facilities, friendly work-mates, plenty of support with the research, the opportunity of work placements in industry, the chance to attend conferences and a fun working environment.

    Cons

Stressful at times with a lot of pressure placed on getting results quickly, also often thrown in at the deep end and working mostly independently which can be disheartening when the project is unsuccessful.

    Advice to Management

Try to create a more balanced work-place with a good work-life balance encouraged and to not place too much pressure on students to meet unreasonable targets which could detract from their overall mental well-being.

    Pros

great city, great place. Lots of opportunities to travel in my PhD ranging from China to many places in the USA. Great research projects at a world leading university.

    Cons

Academia can be slow and a little tedious. Be prepared to do a lot of isolated research, everyone is too busy with their own research and you can feel a little alone sometimes.. although to counter this they usually have a lot of group meetings.

    Advice to Management

I believe the PHD programs are very good and will set me up with the skills i need to get a good job. I say just continue doing what you are doing.

I have been working at University of Manchester full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good availability of resources, lots of events for employability, if you play well your cards you can make a lot of contacts that can help you when you finish your PhD.

    Cons

School administration and HR are a big mess. Some initiatives are there just to show up but are not actually working.

    Advice to Management

You know the things that are broken, just fix them.

I have been working at University of Manchester as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

University at the forefront of research breakthroughs.
    Excellent research facilities.
Good support network and clearly defined progression pathway.
    Countless extra-curricular opportunities available.
Opportunities to gain experience as a teaching assistant working with undergraduate students.

    Cons

The value of the stipend funding ranges widely depending on company sponsorships (or a lack of).
The experience relies on a good relationship with your supervisor.

    Advice to Management

Continue to add more generally applicable workshops, especially offering skills courses in areas not catered for by some undergraduate degrees, for example, computer programming. These skills may prove invaluable to new researchers who haven't had a chance for professional guidance in these skills.

    Pros

Manchester is a big university with a lot of staff from around a world. Location of the campus is very good, access to city center and many other places relatively easy. Good place to live.

    Advice to Management

To improve service of foodOncampus. Offer more career events for graduate students.
