I worked at University of Southampton full-time

    Pros

    High-profile researches and academics
    Lots of funding available
    networking opportunities
very good cleanroom and laser lab facilities

    Cons

PhD students are not valued as much as they should in the more competitive and large research groups.

    Advice to Management

The graduate school should be more careful on how they handle this.

I worked at University of Southampton (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Really, genuinely pleasant atmosphere

With exception to specific times of year (around intake for example), hours are consistent with very few late finishes

    Cons

On occasion, some degree of confusion around a task due to hearing different things from diffferent people, although this is often addressed quickly

    Advice to Management

Try to streamline the process by which jobs are handed to GAs

I worked at University of Southampton full-time

    Pros

A great community, some wonderful colleagues and meaningful work.

    Cons

(Occasionally unreasonable) high expectations from management, heavy bureaucracy, unhealthy cultural of presenteeism and working beyond your contracted hours.

    Advice to Management

It would go a long way to invest resources lower down in the organisation and remove some of the dead wood at the top.
