    Pros

The academics are great, and it is a multicultural environment. Admin team was also very efficient. Was pleased with my time spent at the university.

    Cons

In quite a few occasions, certain facilities, such as the library, the gym and/or the catering services, tended to get overcrowded.

    Advice to Management

Good management overall. However, some upgrades will have to be taken for some of the services to allow them accessible for more people.

I have been working at University of Southampton full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Challenging and rewarding job, supportive managers. Positive 10-year plan under the new VC.

    Cons

The University is going through major changes under the new VC so it is rather unsettling environment at the moment.

    Pros

The staff are alright. Southampton is not a very bad place to live in but you can get bored easily.
If you prefer a quiet life then Southampton is for you. The UNiversity itself is prestigious and one of the top Universities in the country.

    Cons

They need to put more effort into managign funds when it comes to student projects especially in engineering.
Students should be encouraged to participate in moe technical projects.

    Advice to Management

Try to concentrate on your strengths and improve the Engineering faculty. The rankings of the University have been falling over the past couple of years.

I worked at University of Southampton (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Vibrant campus setting; 30 days annual leave + bank holidays + 6 additional closure days; good emphasis on work-life balance; USS pension; opportunities to work in different professional departments; sabbatical leave possibilities; competent management; affordable accommodation in a lively city

    Cons

Vice-Chancellor's pay increases disproportionately; offices can be crowded; not situated conveniently for either of Southampton's stations

    Advice to Management

Review functions regularly to ensure efficiency

  9. "Excellent university, fantastic physics department."

    Star Star Star Star Star

    Pros

The university's physics department is one of the best in the world and covers a huge variety of disciplines each at leading standard.

    Cons

The town of Southampton itself lets the university down and is very student heavy. However it is easily commutable from Winchester.

I have been working at University of Southampton full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Russell Group status
    - Research is well-funded and tends to be quite novel
    - Friendly university
    - Highfield campus has a lot going on, and is visually appealing
    - Plenty of societies
    - Some professors/lecturers leaders within their fields
    - University bus service is regular and the routes are quite good

    Cons

    - Faculty organisation is abysmal; communication with students especially dire in Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Health Sciences
    - Student Union either mis-manage budget or are under-funded
    - Disjointed feeling between satellite campuses
    - Postgraduate students are under represented, although this has gotten better over the past year
    - Clique behaviour and favorutism between staff members is noticeable
    - Supervisors in managerial positions have not necessarily had the correct training, and so subordinates feel disgruntled and poorly managed

    Advice to Management

The key areas to be addressed are budget management, faculty structure, and postgraduate student (with emphasis on welfare, supervisor training, representation, and career development).
