    Doesn't Recommend

I worked at University of Southampton full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Beautiful location with good facilities on campus and excellent staff benefits. Great social scene with concert hall, theatre, gym/pool, various clubs and societies.

    Cons

Impersonal, rigid and unsupportive environment with some odd office politics and a focus on what "grade" everyone is. Not forward thinking, half of the job was spent doing tasks that could and should have been managed in a fraction of the time by better IT systems. No proper training for the role despite requests, followed by criticism for not getting it right first time. Little autonomy or opportunities for development. A small number of staff very unfriendly and unapproachable (including those involved in my "training") including subtle passive-aggressive remarks, although others were supportive - I don't wish to tar everyone with the same brush - but that small number of staff left me feeling unwelcome and with no confidence in the role. Bad enough that it had a rapid and serious impact on my mental health. I left after six months and would not work here again.

    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at University of Southampton full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Flexible working is quite good I guess. Although it's kinda redundant at the minute with Coronavirus.

    Cons

Not a very modern or innovative place to work. It's probably OK if you just want "a job" to zone out, pay the bills etc without developing any modern skills. Lots of people here just comfortable, cruising along for years without any changes. If you actually want to develop and learn new skills you probably won't stick around here for long. It seems very easy to coast along without actually doing much - nod, say the right things and just collect your paycheck. Lots of current employees, I have no idea what they actually do. And lots of employees who've left, I have no idea what they contributed. Internal processes and systems are VERY slow and outdated. It takes a LONG time for anything to change. Things have to be approved by multiple different people, committees, boards etc. Very bureaucratic, so much red tape and box ticking exercises to make anything happen. Culture is reactive rather than proactive. HR are very unresponsive, I never got any answers to the questions I asked them.
