    Cons

Quite honestly I don't have any.

    Advice to Management

Some managers are less experienced and are new to leadership and perhaps could do with some staff management training.

I have been working at University of Southampton (More than a year)

    Pros

Easy to fit around studies, very good fun as well as being useful for developing a number of key skills in event management and communication. So enjoyable it hardly feels like work.

    Cons

Prior to some of the larger events they require you to attend "training" sessions - often unpaid - which are usually just the event organiser showing a powerpoint which could have easily been e-mailed to the student ambassadors. They waste time and are of little use.

    Pros

    Independently responsible for workload
Workshops are accessible by staff to use during research time & summer periods
A satisfactory pay spline increment every year

    Cons

Sharing of quality teaching and learning is not high on the agenda.
Departments and staff very independent from one another.
Some outdated practice still prevalent by older members of staff

I have been working at University of Southampton full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The campus is great and constantly evolving. The research facility for my PhD was world-class. My colleagues were knowledgeable and thriving for the best research.

    Cons

Some oddities on campus such as food prices that are higher than outside of campus. Sometimes the administration can be tedious but in general every problem is solved in reasonable time. The city of Southampton is not great although it is experiencing a lot of change for the better.

    Advice to Management

Working conditions need to be prioritized over outreach. Southampton uni cannot accommodate as many students as it thinks it can in the current environment.

I have been working at University of Southampton full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - good atmosphere, dynamic environment, helpful people - but this is down to certain people, not the organisation as such

    Cons

    - too much corporational stuff everywhere, too much central planning, but probably there are necessary for companies of that size

    Pros

Challenging and rewarding job, supportive managers. Positive 10-year plan under the new VC.

    Cons

The University is going through major changes under the new VC so it is rather unsettling environment at the moment.

I have been working at University of Southampton full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

In our team, we have autonomy to work as we see best, and this includes planning and delivering work to students. Great colleagues, it's actually fun to come to work each day!

    Cons

Lack of clear management in some areas where it's needed. Also, things tend to happen quite slowly, but that's rather common in public sector in the UK.

    Advice to Management

Have the courage and knowledge to lead your team wisely, set clear objectives and reward people who work hard. This includes realistic pay rises and career progression opportunities.
