I have been working at University of the West of England full-time

    Pros

Wonderful lecturers, friendly and patient people who explain things in ways that is easily understood.

    Cons

Students often skip lectures, some lecturers are better as any job other than lecturing.

    Advice to Management

Don't just hire people based on experience in the workforce alone. Have them undergo a mock training course with other lecturers as "students" and respond to feedback accordingly.

Yes, PAL leading is excellent experience - but it's also a very popular role with students - so unfortunately we are only able to offer limited hours per week. Congrats on securing a role!

I worked at University of the West of England full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good working with students, helping them to achieve their best. Good facilities onsite. Flexi time.

    Cons

Lack professional development opportunities. Difficult to park and lots of traffic queues in and out of work - thank goodness for flexi start and end times. Policies designed to protect staff from things like bullying have no real substance - ineffectively applied.

    Advice to Management

Offer staff professional development. See beyond the fear that developing staff might mean they leave - they won't if you help them to develop. And deal with ineffective managers - there are lots of them and they can make work lives of those under them totally miserable.

I have been working at University of the West of England full-time

    Pros

UWE is a benign employer that makes an effort to be nice to employees.

    Cons

Your experience is likely to be very dependent upon the faculty/service you are a member of.

I've found the IT Service to be beurocratic, exceedingly hierarchical (to the point senior managers will NEVER get to know people below a certain grade), and have generally had an unhappy experience. However, people in other services and other jobs have a pretty nice time, I'm told.
