    I worked at VHB full-time

    Pros

Corporate benefits and job security after a few years

    Cons

Work life balance does not exist, especially for junior staff members. There is a lot of pressure on junior staff members to stay late, work unrealistic hours and weekends. Overtime is bare minimum where other companies provide time and a half for overtime work. Morale was incredibly low and project managers take advantage of junior staff. HR and upper management were not helpful in solving the morale issues and would rather see people leave then deal with the underlying problems. The billable ratio makes it nearly impossible to bill to general admin time for tasks such as checking emails and responding to client. Many times, I had to use my sick time or vacation time to make up for hours I was missing, especially when there wasn't budget left for certain projects. Extremely high turnover rate in certain offices, especially in the case of younger staff. Not always the best environment for career growth, especially if senior managers are not supportive. Workload is always overwhelming and there never seems to be enough help due to the turnover rate. I always felt my work wasn't good enough and I did not feel I had job security until I was there for 2 years. I would not recommend this place to young professionals.

I have been working at VHB full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Corporate benefits, general job security, managers do want to see you grow and develop professionally and there is company support for career growth opportunities.

    Cons

Work life balance is incredibly challenging here, and that puts an incredible burden on the junior staff. Morale seems low, probably due to everyone's workload, and has led to a high turnover rate with employees. It seems that upper management is out of touch with the day-to-day stresses and work done by junior staff.

Thank you for your thoughtful feedback. Our employees’ career growth and development is very important to us. VHB’s management philosophy holds that our sustained success can only be achieved when there is equal emphasis on business and people so we take your input seriously. We’re proud to report that VHB’s turnover rate is considerably low for our industry.

"You can do well, depending on your manager and the group you're in"

I worked at VHB full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Nice people, very new offices and equipment.

    Cons

If you're not a PM, forget getting a decent raise or bonuses. Most of your progress depends too much on the supervisor's and regional manager's personal goals. The career conversations are more about what they want you to do, rather than what you REALLY want to do. Some groups get treated better than others and there is definitely favoritism. Agree with other reviewers that if you're not in the HQ in Watertown, you're not as important to upper management.

    I worked at VHB

    Pros

Hires top talent, good work product, challenging and interesting projects, intellectually stimulating work. Great place to learn concepts if you're a new grad. Excellent benefits. Ability to occasionally work from home.

    Cons

Very few women appointed to Principal role and upper management. They seem to invest more in expanding the footprint than upgrading the current offices/facilities. High stress caused by 100% billability requirement which does not foster a very social or enjoyable work environment. Made to feel guilty when using vacation/sick time. Lower level employees experience get burned out because they won't hire more help until they have enough backlog to justify hires. Company culture is too stiff/conservative.

    I worked at VHB full-time

    Pros

Energetic, innovative company. Great working environment, great people. Value added approach to what has become commodity consulting. Diverse practice areas create a great environment for learning.

    Cons

New upper management, changing long term vision, lack of understanding of differing business conditions across markets, makes for a work environment that may be OK if you are just coming into the company, but was rather jarring to a long term employee.

I have been working at VHB full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Decent benefits, good IT connectivity, good for someone starting out fresh from school

    Cons

Small room for growth, project managers are overwhelmed and do not provide good mentoring opportunities, everything needed to be done yesterday and there is no budget. There is no respect or appreciation from upper management.

I have been working at VHB full-time

    Pros

Working Environment is pleasant. IT Department is top notch. Salary is average to good.

    Cons

Stressful Environment. It is either way to busy or not enough work. If there is even a hint of a slight slowdown, layoffs are possible. Tremendous competition among managers for staff talent as well as projects. In the past have competed with people in my own office for external work. Very much a "cut throat" environment for middle and upper management. Younger engineers will have a good experience and learn a lot if they are willing to work hard. Unfortunately many good young engineers leave the company when they approach management level because there are no opportunities.

    I worked at VHB

    Pros

Flexible hours and fair compensation along with interesting projects and casual work environment. Good community involvement for charities. Many competent workers.

    Cons

Sneaky upper management tactics; Sweatshop mentality by hiring young, recent grads and pushing them to work uncompensated to keep projects on budget; Older, senior and more expensive workers pushed out the door for young, cheap talent; Active age discrimination seems to be their dirty little secret; Location in Watertown is awful; Management will do anything to stay profitable at the expense of their workers. Program for promotion to associate creates bitter divide between stock owners and workers.
