Pros

I've been working at Valkyrie for 6 months now and I absolutely love it. The leadership team is supportive and transparent. The company is quickly growing, so every day is a bit different. The team members are made up of diverse backgrounds and since our team is relatively small, everyone has become friends. It's a good mix of startup + consulting culture. As a small company, team members have the opportunity to work across departments and learn from the scientists and strategists. The leadership makes it apparent that they're invested in everyone's professional development (they've already paid for me to go to one offsite training) and is open to feedback. I recommend this company for anyone who's interested in data science and machine learning, is a self-starter, can adapt to a fast-paced environment and think critically.

Cons

Valkyrie works in a highly technical field, so if you don't know a lot about data science, expect a learning curve (though the science team will help you as much as they can).

Pros

They have a downtown Austin location which is close to everything with plenty of transit options to get here. Most of the people here are friendly. They hire people with PhDs, which is nice because people tend to be smart.

Cons

No clear mission. They rely on buzzwords and marketing gibberish to get venture dollars and clients. CEO rely on a local startup accelerator to send him clients.

Unfortunately this platform will allow anyone to pose as an employee of any company, with zero verification or accountability. This allows companies to slander successful competitors with impunity. Allow me to correct the misinformation from this post. We have not taken any venture funding, we’ve completely bootstrapped this incredible firm and we have no intention of taking on any investment. We are debt free and very profitable. We've been committed to building a portfolio of real value and that's negated the need for us to bring on any investors, which is a point of pride for the entire Valkyrie team. We're not located downtown, but rather on the Eastside in a lab where we create incredible applications of ML for our clients and push the boundaries of R&D in AI through the development of semantic graphs and differential neural computing. Our vision is clear. We bring applied science and machine learning to five key verticals; Financial Services, Telecommunications, Retail, Healthcare and Energy. We do this by: hiring the best scientists and strategists in the market, implementing our unique application of the scientific method, maintaining a focus on outcomes that tie directly back to ROI for our clients and treating the investment made by our clients as if we made it ourselves. This vision has enabled us to grow at an unprecedented rate. What this team has accomplished in the past 15 months is truly remarkable and they should be proud. It is also this vision that has inspired over 20 people to join Valkyrie in various roles and capacities and I'm proud to say every single one is still a part of the team. The incubator relationships that you refer to contribute to a negligible (less than 5%) amount of our overall revenue. The vast majority of our programs come from referrals from clients and inbound opportunities generated by our thought leadership. Our relationships with the incubators is as much about our passion to make Austin the center for applied ML as anything else. We hate buzzwords at Valkyrie, as we’re a team of scientists and don’t need them. Our work speaks for itself. Take a look at any of our marketing material and you'll find that we exclusively talk about our methods, team and successful case studies. In terms of my contributions to Valkyrie, I have absolute confidence in myself and the leadership team that we will continue to expand Valkyrie's success aggressively. We've demonstrated that ability quarter after quarter and we will continue to break record after record. I have absolutely no doubt about that. I have been and will continue to be tenacious in the pursuit of realizing the full potential of the Valkyrie team. If you are reading this response and would like to join Valkyrie please reach out to us. We are growing quickly and would love to speak to you about our open positions. This is an incredible team, doing incredible things, cultivating incredible talent. Sincerely, Charlie B.

Pros

The culture is healthy, balanced and welcoming. It's a great size where it's not so small that everything feels hectic and tenuous, but it's not so big that it's impossible to do something that feels valuable. The science problems are diverse, require you to keep on top of the field, and push you to think outside of the box. If you like problem solving with data, you'll love Valkyrie!

Cons

This isn't a super cushy large tech company where they do your laundry and give you free lobster for lunch (though we have great benefits). I like that it's more of a scrappy place, but if you want a data science job where you throw your models to an engineer to finish the implementation, or you only want to deal with straightforward, clean data, it's probably not a good fit.
