Great company, if you can ever get in

      Pros

Great people to work with, very open to fresh ideas no matter how new you are. Great benefits and events that keep the workplace fun (beer hour, special activities for holidays, etc.) and amazing benefits for full time employees (commuter benefits, tuition reimbursement, vacation time)

      Cons

If you're a temporary employee, good luck getting converted. Your colleagues will treat you fine but the company excludes you from pretty much everything, no benefits through the temp agency, and you'l be strung along in terms of getting converted to a full time role.

Unstable, rocky executive team, but great benefits

      Pros

Amazing benefits- pay next to nothing for health insurance and you get great coverage, great stock plan, good 401k matching, 6 weeks of PTO. Great people in research, beautiful location.

      Cons

Unstable company, layoffs are happening left and right. Promotions and recognition awards are based on favoritism, stress level is very high, people do not feel there is any job stability there, they began outsourcing a lot of administrative programs last year and those have taken a nose dive in reliability and thoroughness (relocation, benefits, etc). I think the CEO is shaping the company for sale so no one should feel stable there for the next few years.

      Great place to work overall!

      Pros

GREAT people to work with- especially Associate Director level and below. Lots of young professionals, so high energy, great morale. Work-life balance is amazing- working over time is not at all common and not expected. Flexible work hours as long as line manager approves (they typically always do). Unbelievable health, dental, pet care, tuition reimbursement, etc. and great pay. Four weeks paid vacation to start, 5 years after being there 5 years. Week between Christmas-New Years is closed.

      Cons

Re-orgs seem to happen frequently. Pretty political place to work- as are almost all businesses. Promotions seem very difficult and rare. Not much of a career path for junior employees (up to manager level). Dependent on department, many of the director level and above employees are ok, not great, and not loved by all who work under them.

      Pros

Vertex is an extremely unique organization with great people and a great deal of opportunity to learn and grow. The company and the people expect you to work hard at Vertex, but in my experience those that work hard here are recognized and rewarded.

      Cons

Vertex is growing and still venturing in to unchartered territory which is both a source of exciement here as well as some frustration. At times the need to be nimble results in wasted efforts.

Great people! Experience likely supervisor dependent

      Pros

In research the atmosphere is generally good and most of your colleagues are great people aside from the few outliers. Overall experience will definitely depend on your manager/supervisor and how they feel you should progress.

      Cons

Corporate decisions are tough and people can be let go without notice or sites closed. It sucks, even if it logistically makes sense.

      Pros

Very unique organization with great people and a lot of opportunity for growth (with or without PhD). There is a commitment and passion for science. It's also a very challenging, dynamic, and exciting collaborative environment. Management is open and attentive. Great benefits for full time employees.

      Cons

Depending on the project, weekends, long hours, and holidays may be expected on a regular basis. Sometimes because it's a smaller company, personnel resourcing may be an issue.

      Know what you're getting into

      Pros

There are a lot of great people working at Vertex- bright, committed, energetic, and fun. The benefit package is excellent, especially the paid time off. They encourage community involvement in many regards.

      Cons

The environment is very political - even office space is handed out by how much the VP of Operations likes your boss. And if you even pretend to have a life outside the company, you will not get ahead. Staff development is an afterthought here, and many managers completely lack this as a core competency and rely on HR to have the tough conversations for them. There are also a lot of folks there who seem to serve no other purpose than to create bureaucracy. The organization is extremely top heavy, and VP titles are handed out like candy on Halloween, creating a level of management that are leaders in title, but not in capability or responsibility. Some people's jobs are reduced to a fraction of their prior responsibility due to lack of capability, and yet they retain their title. The organization works in silos with one hand actively ignoring what the other is doing, leading to re-work and confusion, as well as overlapping roles that lack proper definition and appropriate communication. As someone else posted here: though new ideas are encouraged, be careful who you voice them to. If you happen to get on the CSO's bad side - watch out. It only takes one wrong move, or the hearsay of one person, to get you blacklisted.
