I have been working at Western Power Distribution full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good co-workers, shame about the management.
Good if you like working outdoors and getting your hands dirty

    Cons

The management only look out for themselves, the customers and then employees bottom of the pile.
Average pay compared to other DNO's, but lacking ANY benefits or perks.
Management are too busy fooling the regulator or paying off customers to worry about employees

    Advice to Management

Stop trying to sack your employees, they keep the lights on, not the managers

    Pros

Salary OK, overtime available for craft staff at great sacrifice to personal lives, can't think of anything else positive to say. Training OK but minimal. Long term prospects good if you keep your head down.

    Cons

I could write the equivalent of war and peace on the cons of this firm- I will start by echoing the sentiment of nearly every single review on here- BULLYING. The managers threaten and bully the staff, overworking them to breaking point with little to no appreciation whatsoever. Craft staff expected to perform miracles often with little or no suitable equipment and questionable Standard Techniques.

Best performing? Questionable. If the regulator knew exactly how targets were being met then the upper echelons of management and policy makers would be hung drawn and quartered (refer to review title!) Staff get absolutely no perks other than they still have a job at the end of the year.

"Take Personal Responsibility" is a mantra- what this really means is doing somebody else's job for them because somebody higher up the chain is incompetent to do it.

Management have a very bombastic approach- it's a "like it or lump it" mentality. They are not willing to listen to new ideas or suggestions unless you make it look like they came up with them. Again it's all back to the bullying culture so rife within the industry, and so often mentioned in the other reviews.

Not much opportunity for progression, seems to be on a "one in, one out" basis.

    Advice to Management

WPD prides itself on being the best performing Distribution Network Operator in the UK- it is not. Managing staff by fear and a "smoke and mirrors" approach to the regulator to trick them into thinking they are the best. WPD does however have the potential to be a fantastic company if it weren't for being run by dinosaurs who think that "The Old Ways Are The Best". It's 2016, not 1916- start looking forward and embrace the use of 21st century techniques and technology. Appreciate exactly what your staff are doing, reward them accordingly. Get the ability to listen and embrace new ideas in order to take this company forward.

    "Disgusting and Disgraful Managment team!"

    Pros

Good pay, helpful people, good benefits.... wish the owner new how to throw a smile!

    Cons

Very bullying culture (esp in the call centre), torture you in coaching or grilling sessions, management pick on their staff, if they don't want you they will go miles to get rid of you! effects your personal life and somewhat personality, I left no job to go to, mortgage and bills to pay but even if it made me homeless I would never consider working there! absolutely soul damaging! I am now in a far better job, really happy and it wasn't the job I couldn't do... its the disgraceful management I could no longer be bothered with so I showed them my great butt!!!!

    Advice to Management

it is important to bear in mind that some types of harassing or threatening behaviour – or communications – could be a criminal offence.... also follow Richard Branson's quote: "Put your staff first, your customers second & your shareholders third"

    Cons

Old style bully-boy management, rling by fear and fear alone.
    Not a "world class company"!
Step out of line one bit and you're gone!

    Advice to Management

Look at what you are employing as lower management, that way you might wake up!

I have been working at Western Power Distribution full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Wages are good for craft and clerical staff, overtime available for some.... I can't find anything else good to say here, but needed 20 words minimum

    Cons

Little to no training above the bare minimum, bullying and intimidation are common from management. The wages for engineers is poor and there is no where to further a career. Jobs are different than advertised usually the job role is actually two or three rungs further up the responsibility table than they are paid at.

    Advice to Management

Management seem to make progression as difficult as possible, they are afraid of new ideas and anyone who is not a yes man showing how bad their current systems and ways of working are.

The "bare minimum" approach may be good for profits but it isn't in the best interests of the staff or the public you serve in the long run.

"Not the best company for technical orientated people. I am glad I've left."

    StarStarStarStarStar
    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

Salary is actually competitive compare to other DNOs. "Your job is secured for another 8 years" after been fast tracked in RIIO period. High efficiency in this business sector.

    Cons

Bullying culture. Relationship between management and employees is terrible. People arround you are mostly pessimistic and protective. No appreciation to in-depth technical knowledge. Engineering analysis is simplified which makes you feel your education is wasted. PhDs and MBAs please don't apply.

    Advice to Management

Respect employees like normal human beings?
