I worked at Wizards of the Coast full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great team, huge growth opportunities for young engineers. Relaxed culture.

    Cons

The company is undergoing a massive culture shift. This lends itself, understandably, to some chaos and anxiety.

I have been working at Wizards of the Coast full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The coworkers I interact with constantly account for a high percentage of the smartest people I know, and that's only enhanced by a culture predicated on hearing out others' ideas, explaining your reasoning, and investigating hypotheticals. Moreover, they're welcoming, kind, and hold high moral standards. I'm surprised and thankful to say that without a job connecting us, I'd still want to be friends with the majority of my coworkers. The people involved are passionate about the work, the game, and the fans, and management is cognizant of burnout and overwork (and often have to encourage employees who want to work too much to take a break). At least up to the Senior Vice President level, leadership is interested in communicating with employees about things that are important to them and actively seek out feedback.

    Cons

The different sections of Wizards are somewhat isolated under people with very different approaches. I can't speak to how much most of this translates beyond the group working on Tabletop Magic. This divide regularly leads to frustrating situations where one team makes decisions that might make sense in a vacuum, but won't shift plans to better mesh with another team's plans and end up just making things chaotic or frustrating for our fans. I've also been less impressed in my brief interactions with senior leadership of other sections of the company. Lag in headcount can also be very frustrating. We work far ahead of time, and while headcount has grown, we're making A LOT more stuff. The CEO is slow to trust that he should allocate additional headcount until increased sales numbers are in, which has resulted in some temporary strains, and a few people being overworked despite their immediate managers' attempts to protect their time. Health plans are also pretty mediocre (tied up with Hasbro's rules despite Wizards folks' attempts to offer better benefits). Skittishness around putting out loss-leader products also inhibits a lot of efforts.

I worked at Wizards of the Coast full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Half-day Fridays, a few nice people.

    Cons

Riddled with toxic directors and managers who will flatly lie and blame you for their failings. Two layoffs a year for no particular reason. VERY, VERY political and unprofessional. Women especially, are VERY disrespected. If you are creative, you''ll quickly learn just to stay silent. If you love MTG or D&D, working here will break your heart. No advancement opportunities.

I worked at Wizards of the Coast full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Coworkers are great for the most part After work gaming Paid time off Flexible schedules

    Cons

Layoffs one to two times a year Most positions have zero impact on games Your ideas will be dismissed Project requirements will change daily and be mostly undefined When you deliver your project that is when you find out what they actually wanted Leadership will change tech stack out from under you c#.net to python and go on a seemingly whim They try to addict you to mtg because you will want to keep playing and buy the product once they fire you. DnD is not celebrated the same as mtg Working there feels like putting fires out on a sinking ship with a spoon.
