I worked at Zühlke full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Culture: Respect for employees, high performance, honesty and integrity, employee development, open communication Very intelligent colleagues CEO (Wolfgang Emmerich) is a great leader. Believes nothing is impossible. Passionate and loyal customers.

    Cons

Although decisions get made quickly the company can take too long to implement them. Swings from too much (customer) demand, to under-utilisation of engineers. Addressing that now by investing in more sales and marketing capacity. Deserves to be larger than it is

Thank you for your review! It is important for us to understand what points of improvement should be our priority but also what we should focus on keeping as great as it already is, like our culture and friendly and collaborative work environment which we continue to work on growing and maintaining. I worked at Zühlke full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great opportunities to work on a wide range of projects in all sorts of industries. I had the opportunity to work in startups to mega corporations building systems used by millions, I worked in several industries from medical, IoT, finance and global banking. Zuhlke has excellent engineers passionate about their craft, I learnt a huge amount from my colleagues and this has massively improved my career prospects. The people you work with care about what they do and are great people that you want to spend your free time with. They offer a comprehensive benefits package with PMI, Critical illness, 25 training days, a dedicated training budget, company off sites, flexible working hours, generous pension and company bonus. In addition to all of that they genuinely care about their employees and were always there for me when I needed a little extra help.

    Cons

Base salaries could be a little more competitive, sometimes took a while to leave a project when I was ready for a new challenge

I have been working at Zühlke full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The people are still nice. Best colleagues. Probably a good place if you are just starting or you get a Lead role.

    Cons

Some big management players control most of the decisions. Nicer management struggle to keep employees happy and make changes. Projects are selected for the money they make, not because they are what engineers want to work on. Training budget is not yours! Payment of camp is almost one third of this budget! They don't tell you this upfront. Very difficult to get promoted unless you are buddies with the big boys.

I worked at Zühlke full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Lots of training time Very agile approach on projects Incredibly friendly colleagues Opportunities to travel Can be on some interesting projects (and some less interesting) but that's part of being a consultant! Great equipment to work with

    Cons

Think I met my line manager once in 3-4 months? And never to discuss how I was doing. Lack of any recognition for work done

I have been working at Zühlke full-time for less than a year

    Pros

There are so many! But to name a few: 1. Everyone at the organisation are super friendly, engaging and offer their advice and support if you ever you need it. 2. The organisation puts their faith and trust in you right at the very beginning. This gives me the confidence and motivation to perform as well as I possibly can. 3. This is the first company I've worked for where you're allowed to make mistakes! This is crazy?! Providing that you learn from your mistakes and find ways to become more efficient over the long-term, it's a win-win for everybody. 4. When the recruitment agency tried to sell me this position, she almost fell of her chair! In her years in recruitment, this is the only company she discovered that gives you plenty of study days to prepare for your exams so you needn't worry about diving into your annual leave allowance. To summarise, I've worked for Bloomberg, WestLB and British Airways and none of these companies comes close to offer you these service bundles to help you in your career.

    Cons

None! If you're ambitious and the skies are the limit, this is the company for you. There is a real effort to make everyone feel special and at home. Sure, not every day will work out the way you want it to but that's life! There are always going to be unexpected curve balls and other external influences, which you simply need to deal with and frankly, are outside the control of this company. If that's the type of 'hands-on' experience you’re after then you’ve come to the right place. This is a company, which is growing year by year so don’t miss out on your opportunity especially if they singled you out from hundreds of CVs. Best of luck.

I worked at Zühlke full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Colleagues have always been very friendly and a good company in and out the office - There is a good culture around Agile methodologies

    Cons

    - bad customers and very boring projects: they try hard to get startup-like innovative projects, but the true is that what pays their bills in the end are customers in banking or insurance industries where you work with outdated technologies, overwhelmed by bureaucracy and politics. Very frustrating and you often feel like wasting your time. - salaries under industry standards: you really have to fight hard to get a fair compensation. You are asked to work longer hours than average (8,5h a day lunch break excluded) but paid less than industry standards unless you are very good at negotiating. Since they bill the customer good money for your work at the end of the month this can be very annoying. - difficult rotation: small company, few customers.. so if you don't like the project assigned to you, you have to wait for a long time to be moved out.

    Zühlke Response

    October 20, 2017HR Assistant

At Zuhlke, we help our clients innovate in many different business domains. In just the last two years we have worked in engagements for clients in government, media, industrial automation, transport, medical devices, charities and utilities. Some of our larger clients are indeed banks and insurance companies, which means that they have to operate responsibly in highly regulated environments and inevitably face a higher administrative overhead than we would like. They typically also have a sizeable client base themselves. We find the prospect of working on products and services that will be used by millions of people on day one of general availability exciting. Very few startups ever reach that sort of user base, and if they do then they have themselves become large. We cannot have it both ways on a single project – work on products and services that are very widely used and work with small and nimble customers. At Zuhlke we are lucky to have a mix of these engagements across our portfolio of projects. But this does not mean our large customers do not want to improve the way they develop software or to innovate within their business environment. They do, and we help them with that business innovation too. Our clients engage us to help them achieve both of these goals, develop products or services and also change the way they develop products and services. All the while we deliver value in the form of working software solutions. Slow and frustrating bureaucratic processes can and do slow down our delivery and must be dealt with when they arise, but probably no-one would be happy if, for one example, their mobile banking app was built using unstable bleeding edge technology, or by unambitious people with poor skills. To avoid those failure modes we recruit smart motivated individuals who enjoy working within effective but non-dogmatic Lean and Agile processes, and using up-to-date but well-proven software stacks, such as microservices written in Java or C#, native mobile apps written in Swift and Kotlin, Web apps built in Angular or React, built as containerized cloud deployments into private or public clouds using DevOps tools such as Splunk and Prometheus. For salaries, we pay people based on what they are demonstrably worth to our clients. Rather than sweat our staff we actually choose to operate at or below the benchmark for net profit margin in our industry. We are an employee owned organisation and do not have to satisfy the hunger for profit of some activist shareholders or speculators looking for a quick return. Instead, we set aside 9% of every employee’s working hours (together with a sizeable cash budget) for professional development and also aim to share around 35% of the group’s profits with staff in most years. Our total package is generous, but it is true that the majority of our software engineers could increase their basic salary if they choose to switch jobs. In fact, staff stay with Zuhlke far longer than average because our staff generally recognize the additional benefits of working for a company that cares about them personally and invests in their career development, as well as caring about delivering appropriate quality to our customers. Career development as a software engineer should not be confused with playing haphazardly with the latest technologies. At Zuhlke we also have an open-door policy. The doors of all members of the management team are open and our staff frequently come and talk to all members of management, including our CEO. Line managers have frequent 1:1s with their staff, we regularly hold staff satisfaction surveys and we do take action based on the results. Just as we pay attention to these reviews and take action based on them, too. Someone who thinks of customers like ours, from start-ups to global blue-chips in almost every sector, as “bad” may not be well suited to a professional services role and we hope that the author of this review finds another that is a better fit for them.
