Pros

Some great people but quite a lot have sadly already left Maternity / Paternity is very generous

Cons

I don't think I've worked in a company that has worse morale across multiple departments and teams. Senior leaders appear to be constantly shooting from the hip making decisions without accountability. Product making decisions with what seems immediate value is the only consideration. If you want to work somewhere where you're proud of the work you put out Zopa isn't it. Some teams have only associates in them which is embarrassing for a number of different reasons, for me this is the perfect example of how Zopa views your development - they absolutely don't care. Senior leadership extremely out of touch Hit a brick wall once hitting senior 5* star reviews to push back up the rating leaves me even more disillusioned, rather than address most the issues that have been raised senior leaders or newly joined are often pressured to write reviews said 5* reviews - this to me says a lot about the attitudes of the company.

Pros

Nothing to highlight as Pros

Cons

Zopa is the worst employer I've encountered, with management showing zero regard for their employees and prioritizing profits and investors over employee welfare. A few weeks after joining, you're repeatedly asked to write Glassdoor reviews, which speaks volumes about the company’s current state. Maybe it was a good place to work long ago, but now it’s clear they don’t care about their people. Recently, they blindsided the entire Quality Engineering team by removing it altogether, claiming 'everyone should own quality' – and none of this was communicated to the engineering team. Everyone was kept in the dark until the very last minute. To make things worse, they had hired new employees just three months before making roles redundant, showing they have no real plan in place and are recklessly playing with people's employment and lives. To add insult to injury, they offered one or two replacement roles to those dependent on them, like employees on visa sponsorship, at half the salary. This is both unethical and disrespectful. During company meetings, the CEO and management lethargically addressed questions related to layoffs, with drinks in hand, showing no sympathy for the employees whose jobs and lives were on the line. There’s also a trend of constant layoffs once the work is done, leaving no job security for anyone. If you value respect, job stability, or a company that genuinely cares about its employees, avoid Zopa at all costs."

Toxic company

Pros

Great snacks in London Bridge kitchen - totally nailing it on this, keep up the good work in Canary Wharf. Some really good people, although most of the good ones now have an exit strategy (author included)

Cons

Salaries and benefits are subpar. Management come up with a new elaborate spin every fortnight on how actually Zopa is somehow way ahead of the curve (I eagerly await to see which version they reply to this with), but the facts are quite plain. People are treated poorly. Senior members of tribes have been 'disappeared' with almost no notice. Essentially money is being chucked at people to make them go; which is symptomatic of the basic lack of respect for individuals that the company serially displays. Actions speak loader than empty rhetoric; Zopa is certainly not "in it together". C-suite have a very casual approach with regard to the truth. They are quite content with making reassuring statements which a matter of weeks later are proven to be untrue, and yet will never ever recognise the discrepancy. Case in point - colleagues in the POS tribe were being addressed by the CEO in Spring, who assured them Zopa was totally committed to the operation in Newcastle-under-Lyme. By the start of Summer they were all at risk of redundancy because that office was being closed. Similar things happened when the QAs were summarily disposed of in 2024. Products are pretty poor. Proprietary technology is pretty thin on the ground, every product depends on a different BaaS application and consequentially the experience for customers is a disjointed mess. Everything is sacrificed on the altar of getting stuff done quickly and lessons are not learned. Tech debt is endemic. Despite the above, people are constantly made to feel as though their personal contributions are below the level of perfection Zopa demands. Established members of teams are being told they are underperforming despite working their guts off to try and make the impossible happen. Newcomers are being charged by managers with reviewing the performance of their established colleagues. If this isn't a toxic culture, then I honestly don't know what is.
