I worked at athenahealth full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Great workplace when I joined in early 2017. Company was trying to revamp into a modern tech company by building out infrastructure to scale for future needs. Chill work culture, great vacation/benefits, dogs to work.

    Cons

Technology choices were poor and direction was constantly changing. Developers did not seem to get a say in where the direction is heading. A few months after I joined, company started slashing positions and a round of people were let go. Management started to squeeze every penny in order to do cost savings.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees who normally have the greatest ideas. Ideas should not come from top down, but should be grown from the bottom up. Help nurture that and you will have satisfied employees who try every day to make a difference.

I worked at athenahealth full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Everyone who worked at athena knew what they were doing and generally worked well together. When someone who was was rude and bad to work with was hired, he was later fired because of that.

    Cons

After Jack (VP of Engineering and head of the Austin office) left, the culture took a bit of a nose dive and then a round of layoffs removed most of the oldest employees and those who made sure that there was a fun culture, then large numbers of other employees also left. I'm not sure how it is now. Also, lots of the work is in Perl.

    Advice to Management

Make sure that employees feel that you're on their side and that things aren't getting worse for power plays.

I have been working at athenahealth full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

This review is actually not for athenahealth pune but is for praxify, because athenahealth is actually a great place to work in but unfortunately in pune it's nothing like bangalore or chennai. Although benefits and salaries are equally good but athenahealth pune is basically a brand name over praxify - which is a start-up they acquired in 2017. Praxify was also known as xtremum solutions before and anyone can... look for their reviews on glassdoor or over the Internet. However coming to the experience of working here, you must wonder why there no reviews from this place or only once or twice because this place operates on a very different level of fear phycosis. To cut the long story short here are some pros and cons. Allow me to co relate some of them here. Some Pros 1. Great opportunity to disrupt the EHR space with revolutionary product which can interface with Any EMR. 2. great salaries - in fact way more than the market standards. 3. Fridays are great no one really works post 4 PM.

    Cons

    1. management is least interested or serious about task in hand, more than half of the day senior folks is no where in picture and sometimes the site head appears and just blasts people on how awful the product has been, managers and directors just shift blames rather than owning up things. 2. when you are getting paid 4 to 5 times (lakhs) of your experience, you are more over locked and stuck. 3. ... manipulative and political management, always seeking opportunities to blame people for failures rather than owning up things. 4. you will feel used and disposed immediately after that task is done. 5. fresh blood is there but most of them. Are made Ineffective, they look lost for cause. 6. even there is no HR on this site, so all policies are on paper and on ground there is no one to look after employees interest. 7. if u want get things done look for people before 4-pm on Friday, after that even management is invisible. 8. management try to provide personal touches to people but they are fake and lacks credibility and are momentary. 9. People in management don't hesitate to even publicly shout at even people who have been with them for years, making a scene on floor is not an embarrassment it's a way of life. 10. people every now and then asking management if they are getting shut, this happens almost every couple of weeks after the acquisition by Elliot, of course they get answer as no but most of the time local management looks out of loop on the developments happening in US office and least bothered. List will go on and on, in a nutshell save yourselves from this place if you are really serious about your professional life and mental health.

    Advice to Management

    1. if you would have paid enough attention we wouldn't have been in place where we are in. 2. please do not spoil people's career by bloating their CTC unnecessary when even they dont want it. 3. please come up with better people management strategies, work on your emotional intelligence. 4. try to delegate if not everything at least few to next level if its too much for you. 5. nothing really, cut... down on your audacity at least, hire a pseudo hr at least. 6. senior guys in management not to drink and drive in vicinity every now and then, please be a good example for young people around.

I have been working at athenahealth full-time

    Pros

Very nice office, very open and sunny and pleasant. Many very talented engineers.

    Cons

    1. Although they base their interviews around complex algorithmic questions, the actual work largely pertains to copy/pasting prewritten legacy code from a monolithic Perl codebase. There's a 15,000 line JavaScript file which nobody touches anymore that's included in all pages whether it's needed or not, a file which has grown like a tumor over 15 years. Nobody has the willpower or time to refactor it. That sort of... sums up most of the code here. 2. Perl. 3. Constant meetings. Athenahealth has a culture of meetings scattered throughout the day, every single day. Good luck getting uninterrupted time to focus. People just shrug at it like "what are you gonna do? so it has always been, so it shall always be." 4. Some managers here would have done better to remains as individual contributors. They don't have much in the way of people skills. But that's probably true in most companies, so this is a weak point.
