Wasn’t for me.

Pros

It is a permanent job.

Cons

This is just my experience. As a surveyor, your job is simply to churn out valuations and surveys. The quantity of work required, which to be fair is typical for the industry, can be problematic. You have to undertake 6 “points” per day, regardless of the ease or complexity of the property or travelling required. Consequentially, I found myself to be constantly clock watching rather than focussing on the task at hand, which I had a problem with from a professional point of view. I frequently missed bonus targets, regardless of the fees generated. I had problems with my line management as I found being micromanaged difficult.

Pros

+ The office staff try their best but are underpaid for the work they have to do + Some good colleagues to help keep you sane whilst doing a very isolated job

Cons

- Very long hours and overtime pay is contractually excluded for Surveyors - Expectation of picking up tasks which are not related to the job - Lack of managerial accountability, its always YOU that's not good enough - Not enough time to undertake the work in way which makes you proud of your profession, as a professional should be - Outdated management style, with no new ideas until the PLC intervenes - Flexibility in the work used to be a positive, but has been annihilated by processes and relentless chasing of fees, no matter what the cost - Zero consideration for the mental health of field staff, working in isolation - Have to try and plan your holiday a YEAR in advance whilst competing with two other regional teams for the time off. The most absurd leave allocation system in any company I have ever worked for. The company is surviving on the good-will of its workforce who are working long, unpaid hours to meet the needs of corporate banking institutions and private clients. A well oiled sales pitch is what got me to sign on the dotted line. The job is very different in reality, which is met with incredulity by management who just say 'that's the job' when challenged.

Pros

Decent firm, however the work regime is brutal and very unforgiving.

Cons

Expect 10-12 hour days and don’t expect a thank you.
