Ideal for a first job, students, the semi-retired, or as a secondary occupation.

      Pros

Genuine family environment, ability to transfer between stores (I transferred to and from stores between term whilst at university), plentiful hours at sale periods, ability to gain experience in both shopfloor and stockroom, easy to use employee portal, uniform allowance, employee discount, sociable working hours.

      Cons

Full time contracts almost never given out, hours can vary wildly depending on the size and trade of the store, etiquette can vary a lot between stores - (some stores abide much more to the rule book than others, which in itself has pros and cons), lack of opportunity/difficult to progress within the company

Thanks for a really detailed review. It make us happy to hear that there are some really goof friendly vibes. We're sorry to hear that you feel like you can't progress, we'd recommend picking this up with your store manager for sure. As you've said above there are some really good work perks at Next and it sounds like you are taking full advantage of them.

      Good for retail work

      Pros

There is a decent variety of work to do in the bigger stores. The worst thing about working retail is the boredom while you wait for customers. However, Next upholds relatively high standards for the stores and provides a lot of different services (including sales). There is always something to do. Also, most of the information, training and rota-related activities can be accessed through the employee portal online (anywhere and anytime). It saves a lot of headache and everyone knows where they stand.

      Cons

Working in the Home section can be uneventful if you are not trained for it. This is a problem because a lot of the people who end up working on Home are untrained (including me). This means much of work becomes taking customers to the trained staff rather than doing stimulating work yourself.

      Pros

You are able to easily take on extra shifts and also there is a take time off option on the employee portal

      Cons

The managers are rude and unhelpful. The work load is heavy and there’s no proper training provided.

      Extremely inflexible

Oct 27, 2017 - Sales Consultant in Colchester, England, England
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

-Discount -Good Colleagues -Bonus -Good and useful online employee portal, great as it allows you to offer your shifts up on a central system so others looking for additional shifts can take them (no need to ask a manager first) -Uniform allowance -Staff shops (pre access to sales) -Straightforward application, interview, trial and induction -Vast majority of customer interactions are either fine or positive. We're encouraged to have conversations with customers, which some people might not like the idea of but actually these positive conversations can really brighten your day

      Cons

-Both the managers and the automatic shift allocation system ignores your availability, no matter how many times you point it out -Like many retail jobs, they expect you to be available full time for a part time job -No holiday earned in overtime (most of the hours you work will be overtime) -Senior management will not assist with customer issues, even if they're the only managers available (on Sundays there's usually only two managers in the whole store to cover women's, childrenwear, menswear and home) -Huge problems with the Directory branch of Next means we deal with angry customers (who do on occasion insult us directly) near everyday for faults that have nothing to do with us -The targets expected of the delivery team are unreasonable. When shop floor staff are asked to do delivery shifts the same targets are expected despite having much less experience. -Equality and diversity not taken seriously enough. Staff have been questioned by senior management why they've opted out of Sundays, despite the fact they legally can't ask. -When you've been allocated a shift you can't do, even when you indicated you can't do it well in advance and it's their fault you were put on it, they still make it your responsibility to give the shift to someone else, and then get flustered what to do when no one else takes it. They don't realise this isn't your problem but is theirs. -Company very slow to catch up with trends, leaving large amounts of stock unsold because they missed the window of opportunity -Management always say yes to customers who want to return goods they absolutely cannot return. This is embarrassing for sales consultants who have just said no to a customer that, for example, wants to return a pair of shoes which didn't fit but are now covered in blister blood with nothing else wrong with them. Not only are managers constantly breaking company policy and making losses, but they're encouraging customers to keep doing this by saying yes
