Strategists are generally well-paid, with starting salaries somewhat over the national average. With the right experience and knowledge of their company, they can earn into six figures. Additionally, a career in strategy positions candidates with the skillset and network to move into management and executive-level roles.
Experience is the key to increasing your salary in your career as a strategist. Successful strategists can see their salary increase by 50% after four years on the job. So what can you do if you don’t have experience on your side? Start by taking time to expand your career skill set. If you have the base of a bachelor's degree, consider pursuing a master's degree in a related field to transition easier to better paying positions. Seek out the multiple options for certified training relevant to your industry and that enhances your specialisation in the field. You may even want to switch industries, as some are higher paying than others, such as the finance industry. Taking these steps on top of the knowledge you are already gaining in the field will give you a competitive advantage when aiming for a higher salary as a strategist.
Negotiations are all part of your career path, whether you’re looking for an internal promotion or you have your eye on a new strategist job. First you’ll need to do a bit of preparation and research. Gauge the market value of your position by reviewing related postings from other employers and use these findings to settle on a number you feel confident about. Negotiating can seem daunting, but prepare a plan in advance. Strategists who can demonstrate successful results from their strategic initiatives are more valuable to their organisations. Knowing this puts you in a favourable position to negotiate a higher salary. Think about the wording you would like to use, and say something along the lines of "I strongly believe my market value is this" to emphasise that you know the industry benchmarks and you’re well prepared for the meeting.
