What is a Planning Manager?

Planning managers are administrators responsible for a broad range of duties related to the day-to-day functions associated with planning, supplies, and operations. They supervise a team of planning specialists, analysts, and other staff members. They develop and implement plans for organizing logistics and supplies, create and oversee master schedules and calendars, and monitor inventory lists and supply orders. They often coordinate schedules, deliveries, and work tasks involving other teams or staff members, and may serve as a liaison among internal units and with external vendors.

Planning managers typically have at least a bachelor’s degree in a business or planning discipline, and a strong background in roles involving planning or logistics. They must have excellent project management skills and should be proficient in the use of planning tools and software programs such as Excel.

  • Create and implement inventory allocation strategies to maximize inventory placement, turns, sales, and customer experience.
  • Continuously improve key end-to-end planning performance indicators from Forecast MAPEs to customer on-time delivery.
  • Evaluate forecast status indicated by Critical Path(s) for program schedules.
  • Emphasize leadership and development opportunities to employees through coaching, motivating and goal setting to ensure the integrity of the program baseline to ensure effective program performance and meeting of goals.
  • Plan and coordinate with customers for the identification and the timely entrance and exit requirements for events.
  • Create and execute strategies that result in sustainable value creation that delivers measurable results.
  • Maintain schedule control and records any significant changes to documents.

Qualifications for Planning Manager

  • Bachelor's or Graduate's Degree in business, finance, engineering or information technology or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with Cloud, SQL, and Planograms software, systems, and processes.
  • A leader, collaborator, and problem solver.
  • Comfortable running budgets, business case development, and supply chain leadership exercises.
  • Able to prioritize tasks on the pipeline and strive for continuous improvement.
  • Prior consulting experience and Six Sigma training.
