I have been working at Judopay full-time

    Pros

I have worked at Judopay for a few months now and love the culture in the office. There is a lot of trust which means we are able to work remotely and with the unlimited annual leave, we are able to get a healthy work life balance. We now have an office puppy which is a great and fun way to break up the day! Everyone is super friendly and sociable so I have always felt included in activities and social events. ... We have monthly reviews which have just ben introduced to allow us to work towards goals and have any coaching with line managers. I work directly with Ryan (CEO) and love the way he works as there is no micromanaging and I am able to make my own call on certain decisions. Office is based close to Shoreditch, Old St and Liverpool Street so great location for food and gym!

    Cons

The managed building we work at can be busy at times and as there is only one lift, it can take some time to get in and out of the office. It is also difficult to book meeting rooms as we don't have much space in the shared building.

I have been working at Judopay full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    - Working for a scale up is fun and dynamic, meaning everyday is different - The office has a laid back atmosphere (and has a couple of our employee's dogs come in from time to time!) - Excellent benefits - progressive mental health policy, working from home/flexible working, perkbox, health insurance, competitive remuneration, AND you get to work at home on your birthday - Genuinely feels like a family with a... strong culture of transparency - Still a small enough company so that individual efforts get recognised and celebrated within the team. Also the smaller size of the company means that if you recognise a process/issue that isn't working or could be improved, Judo will be able to adapt and make changes quickly - The Judo office is in a shared office building, which is called Rise, that has regular events including yoga, film screenings, and weekly socials - Excellent work-life balance

    Cons

    - Sometimes the office gets quite quiet on Fridays as many people work from home

    Advice to Management

I love that the management does monthly updates/breakfasts and lets all staff know of what is happening in every aspect of the business - I hope this will continue as it is great to know what we are all working towards

I worked at Judopay full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The technical guys who remain at the company, as in developers and support, are intellectual. The company used to spend alot of money on their colleagues by throwing amazing parties, due to budget this isn't as it once was. Food provided weekly

    Cons

Some members of management are very egocentric and like to display dominance and press authority on certain individuals, all whilst displaying a 'family togetherness' in front of others. The leadership team support each other through tooth and nail and divide the staff and set them against each other. We were told to rate each others performance at work which would directly impact their livelihood. Positive... constructive feedback should have been used rather than getting colleagues to highlight negatives in each other. The company had under 30 people during my time and there used to be different rules for different people. Some people were consistently allowed to stroll in late 30 minutes without question whilst a couple were being drilled and given a formal warning for being 10 minutes late even though they may have worked till late the night before. The company uses slack as proof of lateness when you could just be notifying your colleagues that there is a slight delay and you 'may' be a little late. The company show a lack of desire to progress in their field. Without an in house mobile developer and with continuous large scale services outages, the client base have started to realise why Judopay has struggled to become an established player amongst their competitors. The company structure is poor to say the least with a great divide between technical and non technical staff. A very very small technical team doesn't help matters, what makes it worse is the lack of desire shown by some when it comes to progressing with the technical knowledge needed to do their job. Work is also not balanced appropriately with a few individuals carrying the company through the mud whilst the rest enjoy their free time or catch up on sports. Be careful, don't let them sell you the dream in an interview.

    Judopay Response

    August 12, 2019HR Manager

Hi, We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your review, we are committed to creating a transparent and collaborative environment for all of our employees, so we are disappointed to hear about your experience. Firstly, we want to thank you for your positive comments about the team. We definitely agree with you here, at Judopay we have a highly intelligent team, across the board. Our company culture is at the heart of everything we do, we strive to ensure that our employees are engaged and that their hard work is rewarded with exceptional benefits. We have a supportive work environment full of fun and autonomy, that empowers our team to achieve amazing things in their careers. We may not throw ‘amazing parties’ like we have done in the past, but we are instead using this money more effectively and using this budget to invest in other areas, such as increasing headcount in all teams and more supportive rewards such as 1-2-1 coaching. Our managers (and employees) live our values, one of which is ‘we are like family – we call out great work and we support each other to do better’. Managers are extremely passionate about promoting career progression and supporting our employees (apologies if this was perceived as dominance), these were indeed positive constructive feedback sessions and are important to drive change and ensure improvements in the team, apologies if you received negative feedback here. To reply to your comment about lateness, we are a flexible company and we understand that delays occur (especially with London transport!) However, individuals being consistently late week on week and not following process, particularly where team meetings are then missed in part, or whole, is not supportive towards their team members or indeed our customers, so this is something we do look at seriously. Thanks for your comment about the size of the technical team, we feel work is balanced fairly across the team as this year we have made some key hires in this area and our technical team is currently the largest team within the company, making up 35% of our total headcount. We balance our in-house team with outsourced experts and as such, do not view an absence of in house mobile development as a disadvantage. As of August 2019 we have once again hit record transaction volumes and continue to show impressive month on month growth. Our continued investment in innovation has us recognised by awards, our partners, our customers and our competitors. Having said that, we are a startup, we are not perfect and we do make mistakes but at the centre of our culture is how we learn from them. Thank you once again for your insight, this helps to make Judopay a better company for everyone. We would like to wish you the best of luck in your career and in all future endeavours.
