Pros

Data Coders get a good look at marketing research data, and the position might be a good launching point for new grads interested in an MR career but who haven't gone through a Research Analyst post-grad program. You'll get a lot of experience coding open-ends for a wide variety of studies, along with survey QA and translation (if you speak French). My colleagues were pretty nice people - mostly a young, easy-going group. The senior management was forward-thinking and really helpful.

Cons

Micromanaging supervisor, really unpredictable hours (basically on-call). There didn't seem to be any sort of advancement path out of the coder position at Research House, even for people with a relevant educational background. The culture is a bit tricky - people in the ops room weren't really seen as market research professionals, but had a different set of responsibilities from phone room staff.

Pros

For those interested in marketing/market research as a long term career this could be a great resume point. You aren't selling anything which is a plus! Hours were good, started at 9:30 (sometimes 10) and would end

Cons

Micromanagement from the supervisors who treat you like a child (despite the fact that many of us were the same age if not older), watched incessantly and berated if one is even a minute late from lunch or break and if anything is done wrong during the actual job. Funnily enough my training lasted for 20 minutes and when I asked for more assistance (this can be a pretty complex job) the supervisors treated me rudely. EVERYONE with the exception of maybe one supervisor was terrified of the female manager, so the turnover rate was almost as high as one of those sketchy telemarketing jobs despite it being totally legit. Also my hours would be randomly cut, sometimes I would work 40 hours a week and other I'd be lucky to work 3 hours in a week (that was my final straw).
