Pros

- A culture like nowhere else I've ever worked - good vibes all round - Growing fast and a really bright future. It's a good time to join the company ahead of the curve. - Really cool offices on St Katherine's Docks - great for summer lunch times - In-house chefs providing 3 cooked meals a day. Free! - Monthly 'expiration' parties, all put on by the company - Flexible working hours and holidays - Autonomous work approach - work on what you think is important - Self management - there are no bosses, just teams all working towards a common goal

Cons

- Self-management isn't for everyone. You'll need to have your own internal motivations for getting work done - Be prepared to structure your day yourself (not a con but a challenge for some) - Lack of traditional 'corporate' practices takes some adapting to if you're coming from that field (in a good way)

Company transparency is fantastic, everyone is treated like a responsible adult regardless of age or experience, you are given the tools to make yourself successful.

Pros

- Interesting work if you like sports gambling and/or finance - Broad tech stack to learn from - Great individual contributors - Chances to travel to other offices around the world

Cons

Working for the Smarkets CEO is one of your best chances to experience what it would be like to work for Donald Trump except the Smarkets CEO doesn't have the ability to negotiate or sell anything. For example he offers employees who would like to work from home, the opportunity to work less hours and get paid less instead. He is the epitome of a narcissist, he has opinions about everything, but knowledge about none of it. The people inside the company who will defend him are classic bootlickers, and placate him at every turn. The flat structure doesn't serve you, the common employee like you might think. It actually gives you less defense against the CEO's micromanagement, outbursts and outright bullying. All the managers leave after a year or two because the CEO is impossible to deal with. Most employees I know at Smarkets make their top priority at work avoiding the CEO at all costs. And like another reviewer mentioned, you can only avoid him for so long before you are on his radar. At which point you get to engage in the CEOs favorite activity, public shaming.

Although we started as a completely flat hierarchy, especially when we were a small startup, we have since progressed by adding some more structure for clarity and to create opportunities within the company, since we broke the 100 person barrier. We’re sorry to hear about some negative experiences and we hope you gave the feedback internally to our teams to help us move forward.
