Pros

- The perks are great and include free breakfast, lunch and dinner and a monthly paid for party at a hired venue near the office - The office is one of the best in London - It's possible to work flexible hours within reason - Working at Smarkets is by no means a chore and I often enjoy my day at work - Great working culture - Smart colleagues - In my opinion Smarkets does have the potential to have a large impact on the gambling industry. I think a lot of employees buy into the vision of what Smarkets could become - Senior management are generally forthcoming with most information. The CEO holds meetings with the whole company where employees are free to ask questions on any work related subject and the CEO will give an honest answer - Self management structure, while not perfect, is preferable to a traditional hierarchical structure

Cons

- Working at weekends and occasionally out of hours on evenings is unavoidable - Lack of transparency over some decisions - Power of veto is used too much by CEO when others who specialise in certain areas should be trusted to make the decision - Long term strategy changes too frequently - Some decisions are idealistic rather than pragmatic which can be frustrating

Pros

- Interesting work if you like sports gambling and/or finance - Broad tech stack to learn from - Great individual contributors - Chances to travel to other offices around the world

Cons

Working for the Smarkets CEO is one of your best chances to experience what it would be like to work for Donald Trump except the Smarkets CEO doesn't have the ability to negotiate or sell anything. For example he offers employees who would like to work from home, the opportunity to work less hours and get paid less instead. He is the epitome of a narcissist, he has opinions about everything, but knowledge about none of it. The people inside the company who will defend him are classic bootlickers, and placate him at every turn. The flat structure doesn't serve you, the common employee like you might think. It actually gives you less defense against the CEO's micromanagement, outbursts and outright bullying. All the managers leave after a year or two because the CEO is impossible to deal with. Most employees I know at Smarkets make their top priority at work avoiding the CEO at all costs. And like another reviewer mentioned, you can only avoid him for so long before you are on his radar. At which point you get to engage in the CEOs favorite activity, public shaming.

Thank you for your well rounded review and your feedback. Although we started as a completely flat hierarchy, especially when we were a small startup, we have since progressed by adding some more structure for clarity and to create opportunities within the company, since we broke the 100 person barrier. We’re sorry to hear about some negative experiences and we hope you gave the feedback internally to our teams to help us move forward. In any case, we take these reviews seriously to ensure we are always bettering ourselves and the company we work for.
