Pros
While my actual role at Mayhew was great and my direct team were supportive and hardworking, that's where my positive words end.
Cons
I saw the reviews about how toxic it is to work here and stupidly ignored them. Don't ignore them, it's not worth it!!! Please!!
I gave my absolute everything to this place, working so many extra hours without breaks, volunteering at events such as the Christmas concert, going above and beyond to do everything asked of me and more, plus meet targets and stats (the only thing they really seem to care about other than their reputation) and I was rewarded by being bullied and pushed out.
Mayhew is the most toxic place I have ever worked and I can see why they have such a high turnover of staff. The people who have been there the longest are allowed to do whatever they want and there is no limit to this. I was bullied by a colleague and nothing was done about this except I was made to feel like I was in the wrong, even though I was told by many she had a history of bullying people out and a number of people had quit because of her.
A different male colleague lunged at a colleague, grabbing at her and screaming in her face, having to be pulled off by me and my boss. When I was upset about this and tried to check on the lady it happened to, I was told to stay out of it, not tell anyone and to essentially pretend it never happened, in order to keep Mayhew's reputation intact. That's what it is all about, their reputation. Not their staff or the animals but how they look from the outside.
You are watched like a hawk and criticised for everything you do while the long term staff bully and belittle you. If you value yourself and your mental health, do not work here! I was also made aware that after I left (despite being told up until the day I left that they were sad to see me go) that I was being called a liar and staff told that none of this happened. Convenient since I am no longer there to defend myself.
