Pros

Your benefits kick right in, which is the best thing I can say. No clock-in clock-out, but the boss will illegally spy on you using a Canary so don't think you're getting away with anything if you try to sneak out early.

Cons

Everyone is miserable. HR is an actual joke. The editorial department actually runs the whole show and ices everyone out of their jobs with by having a horrible, micromanaging, and hostile attitude. The employee manual states that employees have COBRA rights (they don't) and that job opportunities will be posted internally first (they aren't) and that they adhere to fairness and equal pay in the workplace (they don't.) The day-to-day operations are all contingent upon the moods and whims of unstable individuals who don't actually know how to collaborate. They have such a horrible reputation that some trade publications actually DO NOT REVIEW Turner books because of principle.

Turner Publishing Response
7y
Turner Publishing provides a respectful work environment for capable, motivated individuals who are dedicated to publishing and marketing the best books. Turner's team is made up of capable, professional, principled people. Unfortunately, every now and then a person makes it through the hiring process who doesn't measure up to those standards. In that circumstance, out of respect for the authors and customers we serve, as well as the other members of the team who do represent those values, some people have to find other opportunities outside of the company that they can be good at.

Pros

I have worked at Turner Publishing for many years, and I have no plans of leaving. We have a collaborative work environment with weekly meetings to share what is happening in our individual departments and present ideas for our titles. Our CEO is overly generous with time and money (usually giving everyone a 2 week vacation in December to spend the holiday with our families without taking time off and providing Christmas bonuses on top of that). The CEO does not micromanage the employees and trusts them to do their jobs in a capable manner. I appreciate this type of work environment, and it is an honor to be part of this team.

Cons

Due to the flexibility provided by this work environment, some employees take advantage of the generosity offered to them.

Shared Understanding The team collectively acknowledged and navigated the challenges posed by leadership, creating a sense of solidarity. Strong Peer Relationships Despite the leadership issues, coworkers maintained mutual respect and a shared determination to make the best of the situation.

Lack of Leadership Support Minimal guidance and training provided, leading to confusion and difficulty completing tasks. Unrealistic Expectations High standards expected despite insufficient resources or support to achieve them. Poor Communication Leadership frequently used condescending and patronizing language, undermining employee confidence. Ineffective Management Style Feedback was often critical without offering constructive suggestions or solutions. Limited Accountability Leadership appeared unchecked, creating a dismissive and unsupportive workplace culture. Unclear Role Definition Employees were assigned tasks outside their expertise without adequate preparation or guidance. Low Employee Morale The work environment felt discouraging due to ineffective communication and lack of respect from leadership.
