Pros

I worked with Fuzzco for just over four years and am proud to say the projects I was thrown on are still my proudest pieces to date. The portfolio you develop working at Fuzzco is incomparable to other companies. I was fortunate enough to work on a variety of high profile projects as well as the mom and pop shops around town. These excited us the most, because of the relationships we were able to build with these clients, which bettered the overall process and work experience. I got to work with an amazing crew of directors, designers, developers and project managers and met some incredible friends through the company. To this date my best piece of advice for college students is to find a small firm where your voice can make a difference and where you can continuing exploring creative styles. Fuzzco offered that opportunity, which gave me confidence in the work I could produce.

Cons

Fuzzco was a young company with five employees when I joined the team. I became the sixth, and from there was able to witness some amazing hires and some not so amazing hires as we grew. Growing pains! It is a fast paced environment, but we all pushed each other to do great work. We learned to strengthen our communication and through that became far closer and tighter. Differences in opinion do come up, but they come up in every company, the difference here is you’re close enough to the owners to hear each other out, whereas bigger firms would often nix that opportunity.

An intense, but very worthwhile experience

Pros

- Amazing co-workers who really support none another - Compensation is solid by agency standards - The client list is top-tier and hard to beat - Interview process was fun and very stress-free

Cons

- The workload can make work-life balance tough to achieve; if you have children or otherwise lots of things pulling you from work, this can be difficult - It can sometimes be a stressful, emotional workplace (which truthfully isn't always a bad thing—conflicts are often worn on the sleeve and dealt with quickly, but not the best for mental health)

Almost the Best Place Ever

Pros

You'll get to work with interesting clients and take responsibility for big projects. The bar is set very high and everyone hired generally has excellent taste. You will undoubtedly do your best work and emerge with an impressive portfolio. The pace is insanely fast (some people like this), so you need to know what you're doing or figure it out fast. No one is going to teach you. My efficiency and skills definitely improved, but mostly through my own determination. The people you work with will be some of the kindest, most creative people you'll ever meet. They're really what make the company shine. Everyone from project managers, to developers, to illustrators, cares deeply about design and delivering top notch work. If there's one thing Fuzzco gets right, it's their hiring. Truly amazing people. Fuzzco also does a nice job of nurturing community for its employees. There's an annual retreat, wine tastings, family-style dinners. They go out of their way to make you feel welcome.

Cons

The fast pace can be a negative aspect if you're not someone who thrives in that type of environment. It becomes a larger problem when it gets paired with a certain level of micromanagement. You could work on a project for weeks, only to have someone review your work the night before the deadline and completely change it. Many issues stem from the fact that the owners don't have any industry experience. This can be good and lead to non-traditional approaches to management and creative direction, but it also has a dark side. There is a no-freelance policy that limits your creative and financial freedoms outside of the office. You will be expected to be available during public holidays if the need arrises. Oftentimes it seems clients have a larger voice than employees.
