What are your New Year Resolutions and how far into the New Year will they last? Many of us promise ourselves that we will go to the gym regularly, lose weight, achieve the things we have been wanting to do for several years but never quite seem to get to. If you look back at previous years, consider for yourself how successful you have been at sticking to your resolutions and how you can make things a little different this year. If you want to stick to the traditional, great! Go ahead. But maybe you could also take a different view and make some positive, long-term changes and enjoy life a little more? Slow Down Many of us spend so much time rushing around that we forget to notice what is right in front of us. We lose the connection to the moment and the people that are important to us. Instead we allow our thoughts to either be in the past full of regrets, or we are thinking about all the things that need to be done next on our to do list. When our thoughts are elsewhere, we don’t have 100% of our energy and focus on the job in hand. We don’t experience what is right in front of us. Slow down, be mindful and appreciate the little things in life. Find the Balance You will never get to the bottom of your ‘to do list’. There will always be more things to add as you tick other things off. Understand that you can do so much in the day, prioritise, work smart rather than longer hours and make sure that you get some down time. Lack of work life balance is one of the biggest causes of stress so make a resolution as to what you are going to do differently this year to create a better balance for yourself. Don’t stop learning Personal growth is one of the essentials for your mental wellbeing. Think of something new that you can learn that will give you mental stretch and bring a little more creativity into your life. What new skill can you learn? What books can you read on a topic that interests you? What things can you do that will enhance your working or personal life? Sleep More Burning the candle at both ends might be fine for a while, but lack of quality sleep is in the mix with the things that send us down the slippery slope to stress. Sleep allows your body and brain to recharge so you can tackle whatever comes your way with energy and motivation. How can you make sure you switch off more and get your 7 to 8 hours a night? Live Life To truly live and not just exist is a skill that we should all focus on. True happiness comes from within not from the next material thing that we can afford to buy. ‘Things’ might give us pleasure for a short while, but they are not the cause of our true happiness. Connect with what you want to get out of your life. What will give you true happiness? What changes do you need to make to bring it into reality? Leave a legacy What is the legacy that you would like to leave in the world? What is your purpose in life? Is there something you have always wanted to achieve? Think about what that is and do something each day to bring it into reality. Don’t lose yourself to the busyness of each day and end up in exhaustion and not achieving your ultimate goals. Make your New Year Resolutions about truly living your life and leaving your legacy so the world is a better place. Whatever it is you choose to do, everyone can all make a difference. Happy 2017!
