With stories in the press that Rio Ferdinand is looking at attaining his boxing licence, it brings into focus the possibility of a switch in career for more of us. So is it time for a change for you? Many of us end up following a career path that others have outlined for us. We can follow a clear path from an early age or even end up stumbling into a certain field when we lack clear direction of what we really want to do. So how do we know our chosen career is the right one? What might have seemed like the right choice when you left school or university isn’t necessarily what will ignite your passion now. If you dread the passing of Sunday evening and hate the thought of getting up in the mornings to go to work, then something is amiss and needs addressing. There are many causes of dissatisfaction:
  • Are you getting enough mental stretch and challenge?
  • Does the organisational culture support your personal values?
  • Are you working in a sector that resonates with your interests?
  • Is your workload well managed?
  • If you have peaks of pressure does that calm to a ‘normal’ pace or is it a constant level that is quickly turning into stress?
  • Do you have great working relationships?
  • Do you enjoy the work that you do?
If you are answering ‘No’ to more than one or two of those questions, then it might be time for you to consider making a change to a role or organisation that boosts your satisfaction levels rather than one that sends you spiraling downwards to the depths of negativity! What transfers? If you want to make a change, take control and give yourself direction:
  • Become as informed as possible. Consider what industry sectors and functions will provide you with maximum interest and support your personal values.
  • Write down your previous successes. This will connect you with your achievements and give your confidence and self esteem a boost.
  • Make a list of your key skills and experience. What will transfer into different roles?
  • Look for areas and activities that interest you and that you want to and can develop in.
  • Consider things you have achieved in your personal life – are there skills there that can transfer in to a new area of work?
  • Think out of the box and follow your passion.
  • Re-work your cv to emphasise the skills and experience that will support your change in direction.
With a planned approach you can transition into different sectors and different jobs. It is never too late for a change in career path. You might need to do some retraining. You might need to take a ‘side-ways move’ rather than a promotion so you can build up your experience in a new field. If it gets you on to the right path where you can follow your passion, enjoy what you are doing and gain satisfaction from the work you do so you feel fulfilled, then it has to be worth full consideration and a little bit of planning. We all spend a lot of time in work, so let’s make it full of purpose.
