No-one told you that being a successful jobseeker is a job in itself, it can be hard work and takes plenty of dedication. Perhaps it would be easier without all the distractions, one minute you’re researching a job role and then you realise you’ve been watching puppy videos for the last thirty minutes. Trying to get back into reading job descriptions after watching baby pugs playing with an inflatable ball is hard!
So what do you have to do to ensure your jobseeking is successful?
Focus
You have to stay focused; it doesn’t mean you can’t watch puppy videos it just means you can’t watch them during the allocated job seeking time. Remove all distractions, set yourself a time and challenge yourself to complete the time allocation. Use a free time tracker app like Time Panther to keep you on course.
Sacrifice
You might have to make sacrifices but think to yourself, it will be worth it in the long run. Weekends are usually the time when most sacrifices are made, your friends are all going out, and you want to go too. Perhaps you look out of the window and it’s a beautiful day, you want to have fun in the sun, but you have to be strong, say to yourself; you are making small sacrifices for you to achieve your goal of getting a dream job.
Resilience
Hopefully, you’ll be one of the lucky ones and won’t hear too many no’s; but if you do hear a few too many don't get down about it. Easier said than done, but the way to do that is to take a no as a maybe, because in the future that no could be a yes but right now you’re not a match. Once you up-skill or get a bit more experience, they may want you in the future, just not now. Don’t dwell or mope, crack on with the next job application.
Patience
If it doesn’t happen immediately don’t throw your toys out of the pram, give it time. Patience means having the ability to remain strong while waiting, some things take time and waiting for the right job offer is worth it.
Momentum
There are ups and downs when job-seeking, and you mustn’t let the downs interfere with your momentum. Nothing should interfere, if you’ve targeted yourself to make twenty calls then whatever happens you must continue to make those calls, if there is a down moment then you need to get up again quickly, the way to do that is to keep momentum.
Collaborate
So you don’t feel too isolated get together with other jobseekers, swap tips and advice with each other. You don’t have to leave the comfort of your home to join one of these groups because there are plenty of them online, Twitter chats, Facebook and Linkedin groups. You’ll find that these groups can become a great support system and will motivate you on the not so good days.
Job seeking is a different experience for everyone, but hopefully, for you, your experience will be easier and even fun, ultimately ending with you getting your dream job.
