You probably think, if you have the right skills for the job, and that there’s no way your shoes can stop you from getting it. The truth is, your shoes can say a lot about you, research shows that by studying someone’s shoes you can gather a lot of information about the wearer.
Many people judge others by the shoes they wear, so you better make sure you wear shoes that give out the right message at your next interview.
As the eyes of the interviewer rest upon your shoes, what category do you think they’ll put you in?
Introvert
Do you wear traditional shoes, the ones that haven’t changed too much over the years, boating shoes for a guy, or maybe trustworthy loafers and always a dependent, black low-heeled court shoe for a woman. You probably buy your shoes from Debenhams or Clarks, you know you’ll be directed to the right shoes when you ask, and you're rest assured there’s no risk because you can always get a full refund.
Extrovert
You’re proud of your big bows on your shoes, your lace up ribbons, outrageous colours, trendy design and oversized heel; you’re definitely an extrovert. Even if you’ve tamed the interview outfit down and gone for a reliable navy blue, you cannot wear boring shoes. Some extroverts even mashup their shoes with parts from other shoes, added beads, glitter, and sequins.
Practical
You like a sturdy looking shoe or ankle boot with a safe square heel; you like lace ups because of how practical they are. A shoe is there to do its job, get you through the day, up and down the stairs, and once in a while, they have to cope with a sprint for the bus.
Your shoes show that you’re focused on the business, and you’re to be relied on to do whatever it takes to get the job done.
Confident
You’re confident enough to wear expensive brands, always high heels for women, with a handbag to match and expensive fashionable shoes for men, usually with a matching belt.
Your attitude matches your shoes, and that is, you know you’re in demand, and you come at a price, employers want you and you know it!
Lazy
Don’t let your shoes ever put you into the lazy category. If you turn up at an interview with unpolished shoes, laces not done up, heels that need re-heeling or any scuff marks then in the lazy category you go. If you turn up at an interview with the backs of your shoes squashed down where you’ve tried getting your foot into them without undoing the laces, then shame on you!
Other lazy giveaways are wobbly heels, flapping soles and price labels still left on the shoes. Don’t ever think that these little things won’t get noticed, because they will!
Now you’re aware of what your shoes are saying; you’ll make sure they're saying the right thing for your next interview.
It also goes without saying that socks and sandals are a definite no-no!
