They may create custom pieces according to an individual client’s personal specifications or make a prototype for a design that will be mass produced. They research and procure materials, sketch drawings, prepare spec sheets, and approve samples. They often work closely in collaboration with R&D, production, marketing, and other departments. They may brainstorm design ideas based on new or upcoming trends.

Jewelry designers may have a college degree or technical diploma in jewelry making or a design field, or a background in art or graphic design. They should be proficient with graphic design software programs. These roles require strong creative talents, innovative thinking, and the ability to spot emerging trends.
