Psychometricians conduct psychological testing using self-reports, observations of practical skills, collateral sources, or a combination of them and utilize the results to identify conditions including a learning disability or factors regarding a test subject’s personality and intelligence. They schedule consultations and secure testing environments for subjects that are free from extraneous variables and distractions. They ensure they have the proper tools before testing begins and that clients understand the purpose of a session before it begins. They administer instruments in a standardized manner and perform slight modifications to translate items if needed and permitted.
Psychometricians debrief clients when testing finishes and score raw data using appropriate norms. They contextualize data to detect whether a client falls within a standard or disordered range of functioning, and they compile a report to outline the results. They ensure they use the most updated version of a test unless otherwise indicated. Psychometricians need a minimum graduate degree in psychology and a state license to practice.
