An exciting new opportunity, the Senior Sustainability & Environment Manager will lead the development and execution of the company’s UK sustainability action plan ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and standards and driving continual improvement. This role will drive UK initiatives to reduce environmental impact, enhance social responsibility, and achieve long-term sustainability goals across all operations and projects in the UK.

Key Responsibilities


  • Working with the Group Sustainability Director, you will lead the development and delivery of the UK sustainability action plan ensuring alignment with Group sustainability strategy and UK specific client and legal requirements.
  • Manage the UK Sustainability Taskforce ensuring effective representation, accountability and outputs from all member in line with the Sustainability Action Plan.
  • Ensure future UK legislation changes are identified, assessed, and communicated. Collaborate with relevant stakeholder to put in place processes to ensure compliance.
  • Ensure a UK environmental legal register is in place, reviewed at least annually and compliance evaluated.
  • Manage the UK ESG and Sustainability reporting requirements ensuring alignment with Group reporting and client and UK specific reporting.
  • Ensure digital systems are in place to aid efficient and transparent reporting.
  • Manage the UK decarbonisation plan in line with OCU’s Science-Based Targets and Group decarbonisation strategy, ensuring buy-in and accountability for action owners.
  • Lead a team of environmental & sustainability professionals and work with Line Managers to ensure they have the appropriate competencies to support the business.
  • Work with business leads to ensure current and future contracts have appropriate internal and external environmental and sustainability resource.
  • Lead on the development and maintenance of the UK environmental management system ensuring continual improvement compliance with ISO14001 and Group sustainability standards.
  • Ensure an environmental aspects & Impact register is kept up to date and significant risks are communicated at a Group level via the Group Sustainability Director.
  • Support work winning by ensuring standard responses are in place and kept up to date. Provide relevant data, ensure bids are effectively resources, and attend bid workshops and presentations.
  • Work with the Group Sustainability Director to raise OCU Groups profile as a leader in sustainability by ensuring attendance and speaking opportunities at industry and sustainability forums / working groups.
  • Ensure environment and sustainability best practices is captured and communicated both in the UK region and across the Group.
  • Ensure that environmental and sustainability training and skills matrices are developed and implemented ensuring all persons with associated accountability have the right competencies to deliver their responsibilities.
  • Ensure environmental incidents are effectively reported and investigated with any required changes to process implemented and communicated across the business.
  • Ensure regular environmental inspections and audits are carried out (and accounted for in the annual assurance plan), identifying and communicating trends to business leads and lead on the development of initiatives to address change.
  • Develop an appropriate set of UK environmental and sustainability key performance indicators (leading and lagging). Ensure these are suitably aligned with any Group led targets. Ensure there is a means of tracking and monitoring performance and support to determine corrective action planning.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise


  • You will be an experienced practitioner (or higher) Member of the Institute of Sustainability & Environmental Professionals
  • Degree level qualified in a relevant subject (Environmental Science, Sustainability etc).
  • Extensive previous experience in deploying Environmental Management Systems and auditing of ISO14001.
  • Excellent leadership skills, able to influence motivate and direct both internally and externally.
  • The ability to coach and mentor team members and others to achieve personal and team goals.
  • Experience of leading and implementing sustainability strategies
  • Excellent report writing and presentation skills.
  • Has a “can do” attitude, is methodical in their approach and can demonstrate results.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Has a real passion to drive sustainability throughout the business.

Base pay range

The minimum salary is £49k and the max salary is £60k.
