Current Employee - Manufacturing Engineer in Sunnyvale, CA (US)
Current Employee - Manufacturing Engineer in Sunnyvale, CA (US)

I have been working at Lockheed Martin full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Get to work on some of the most amazing assemblies, including satellites and fighter jets.
Good work-life balance (depending on your work group). Flex-time.
Great leadership development programs (including generous tuition reimbursement) for early career employees.

Cons

Too much bureaucracy throughout company and industry.
Downturn in defense industry, with concerns of sequestration.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Speed up HR process for internal hires. Act quicker to send employees that are not hacking it (or a good fit) to different organizations or eliminate their job. Too many bad apples throughout the company can bring down the morale of organizations.

I have been working at Lockheed Martin full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great projects, great people, good company culture

    Cons

Military budget is at the mercy of Congress. If they cut the budget, the military budget goes down, which means program budget goes down, which means workforce reductions are constantly looming around the corner in today's economic instability.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't forget to recognize your employees with raises/promotions. Employee retention has already been identified as a problem. Don't do too little too late to retain your stars!

I have been working at Lockheed Martin full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, good ethics and policies, and competitive company. Overall supportive management and good talented employees. Nice perk of discounts for employees with many different companies, health club membership, etc.

    Cons

Found it harder in the economic downturn to get additional training funds that I desired to help me grow professionally and advance to other positions in the company. As with many bigger companies, the HR functions, IT and your reporting management may not be local and may be more difficult or time consuming to get appropriate answers and assistance when needed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase the training initiatives a bit more and promote more internal positions and tranfers between divisions. Provide more assistance to previous employees to come back on board or to retain them when government contracts expire or layoffs occur; promote targeting previous employees who lost their positions for these reasons though targeted recruiting when new positions meeting their skills are announced (the company should look more to contact these previous employees for new positions).
