What is the hiring process like at Northwestern Mutual?

Great company to work for if you get the right manager. I was fortunate. The company had, back in 2021, a lot of people in levels that should not have been managing people. The company is employee minded, and offer amazing benefits to stay relevant in the industry. There's a lot of areas that focus heavily on team building and creating camaraderie. Overall no complaints. Their bonus and annual incentive pay increases are top notch and are all based on performance. There's always room to move around into new positions throughout the company.

You can make more money at other company's. They do make it fair to keep job titles based on category of company operations relevant but technology spaces will usually see higher salaries. You just need to decide if the amazing benefits are more important or higher salary. The company tends to leave decisions of hybrid/remote working with the direct managers. That can be frustrating because in my opinion there are a LOT of bad managers at this company. I've known quite a few to hold you back for their own personal gains and that's how they lose good talent. I believe the middle management is more toxic. The leaders of this company are all great but with how big the company is, they just dont have time to be concerned with it. The recruiters at this company are quite honestly abismal and the hiring process is not at all expedient. Close to the worst I've seen. They take days to respond to your response with times for phone screens, I had a job pend after interviews for 4 months... They put you in interviews, you interview based on the needs of the job description, then are told you don't have the experience needed, when the experienced needed was never even identified in phone screens or the job description. If you're applying, just be prepared for it to take a while, and don't be surprised if you get a few jobs offers from other companies in the meantime. The loss of the 401K match was unfortunate but they tried to make up for it in other places.

- work schedule is not flexible. - joint work a split between you and the lead financial advisor. They split all things with you. This was not disclosed in the recruitment process. - the mentor that I had, did not teach me anything. Continue to tell me to call the people that that I know that was as much training as I received. - rebranding or marketing yourself cost an additional $700 a month. Also not disclosed in their processes. - I was there two months and they taught me absolutely nothing about finances. They gave me a script. Told me to call all my family and friends. And that was pretty much it.

the people in the office are great, good work environment. Victoria Nenchev is absolutely great, working with her is fabulous. Nick Hines, also awesome.

they expect full time work, attending meetings, without hourly work, they want six fact finders but pay you for three. The incoming intern group was originally 16, only 6 passed our licensing test, getting reimbursed had issues for at least three people, within three weeks 2 quit, within 10 weeks another 2 quit before they were even finished. the stipend runs out after 12 weeks. The clients you get as an intern are not going to be as lucrative, so the examples they give during the interview process for commission are not applicable ($100 in reality versus $1000 examples).

Teaches one how to properly orchestrate and manage a business as if it were their own entity

Hiring process vs. reality of day to day duties has a lot of parallels with a "Bait & Switch" scheme. Indirectly force "advisors" to not always act in a fiduciary manner, while also not doing anything illegal either. aka push Permanent insurance products down every clients throat, because that's the only substantial product "advisors" generate income from.

Unlimited compensation that is only limited by your own ability to generate new business. Decent support for new reps. There's support teams that take care of a lot of back office tasks for you and there's a financial incentive program for your first six months that's based off of activity metrics. Management is pretty direct about the nature of the job and what's expected of you. They don't pretend like it's an easy job that's meant for everyone and they communicate that from the beginning

The biggest con is how you're expected to find all your own new leads. It's communicated from the beginning that it will be like that but the support to become better at prospecting is lacking. This is not a job for those that can't self motivate but they are pretty honest about that and the turnover rate for new reps in the interview process. The other large con is that your you're 100% commission after 6 months. It's great if you're killing it but if you're still struggling in your first year, it can become financially stressful. The mentorship program could use some work too. All mentors also are full time reps so they often don't have the time to be as hands on in your development.

They try to sells you on the whole “build your own business” model but it’s another way of saying sink or swim from the start. You will have to make a market of your friends and family and build from scratch.

How you acquire clients. Limited timeline to pass require testing. lengthy interview process just for it to be direct insurance sales. ( 2 weeks of interviews) unless you’re an intern.
