      Software Engineer Interview

      2 Feb 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      London, England
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Accurx (London, England) in Dec 2019

      Interview

I got to the final stage of interview, which was an in person on site interview that I was told would last about half a day. When I arrived, I was first paired with a man who got my name wrong and didn't seem to know who he was meant to be meeting, to talk me through the product. Following this, I went into a room with the CTO and who I believe was the head of engineering for the technical part of the interview. Both of them were really lovely at first, very interested in what I had to say. We started by talking through the code test I had already done for them and where it could be improved. I was asked to make some improvements to it. So far, so good. What really threw me off though is that the CTO was literally leaning over my shoulder watching me do this. It made me feel really on edge. In other, similar situations, I've either been left to my own devices to get on with it, or had someone sit nearby while I narrate my thought process. I've never had someone leaning over me to watch my screen like this. It made me really uncomfortable and I ended up doing a pretty poor job. Almost immediately, the CTO's demeanour changed from friendly and interested to cold and completely disinterested. I still had a whiteboard exercise to get through, but it already felt at this point that the decision had been made. The CTO left the room for the whiteboard exercise, and the man who did it (I think head of engineering) was really kind and lovely and did his best to put me at ease, but the vibe had already completely changed. It would have been a lot kinder to dismiss me as soon as the CTO lost interest instead of making me carry on with this. After it was over, I had been invited to stay for lunch previously, but was left sitting on my own in the kitchen area and told to wait there. Other employees were passing through but not one person spoke to me so I was just awkwardly sitting there for a good ten minutes before i made an excuse and left. It was just a really painful experience over all and would have been a totally different experience had it not been for the way the CTO behaved. I fully respect that I wasn't the right fit for the job, but it takes minimal effort to treat a candidate better.

Hello there, it's Laurence (CTO) at accuRx here. Firstly, thanks for taking the time to pen this review and I'm really sorry you didn't have a good experience with us. Will try to respond to the few different parts you've raised here: - In terms of looking over your shoulder whilst doing the coding, this is a fair criticism and not something I'd really considered before (whilst remote hasn't been a problem either). We didn't really have a good AV setup in our meeting rooms at the time since we were a small company but for future in person interviews we could definitely broadcast to a screen to avoid this (or at least ask the candidate their preference). - In terms of my demeanour, I can only apologise if it came across this way. It's normally the case that our VP Engineering leads this part of the interview and I do often watch/stay quieter. I can assure you though that both our VP Eng and I do independent scorecards on interviews before talking and the same is done for the 2nd half of the interview so we would never dismiss someone early (they may get 3 Yes scorecards out of the 4 interviewers). - For lunch, this may have just been a miscommunication. I don't think lunch was ready at the time and people were going to join for lunch and chat to you in the near future. I'd be more than happy to chat more over the phone or email to understand the feedback further and so I can chat about it openly with the rest of our engineering leadership team.

      Interview

The technical screen in my interview process was quite different from the rest of the stages, which were well-documented and clear on the company's Notion page. Unfortunately, this part of the process felt disjointed and challenging in a way I didn’t anticipate. There were screenshots to walk through (such as a useEffect hook), random trivia on CSS (e.g., the difference between rem and em), and a few "gotcha"-style questions, despite them reassuring me it wasn't a trick. In hindsight, I feel like the best way to prepare for this round is to memorize random trivia, which seems at odds with the recruiter’s original description of the interview. Additionally, I found the interviewer’s approach unclear at times, which led to me misinterpreting about 3/4 of the questions. The interviewer also lacked the soft skills needed to make me feel at ease, which created an unsettling atmosphere and made it harder to perform at my best. If the questions had been framed more clearly and directly, and if there was a more relaxed tone, I believe I could have answered them more confidently. While I’ve never felt compelled to leave a review before, I wanted to share my thoughts on this particular technical screen. Overall, a clearer structure, better communication, and a more supportive interview environment would make this process more effective and help candidates showcase their abilities more accurately.

First was an interview with a lead engineer to find my fit. then a Take-home test was the first. where I was to complete a little task. Then I went through a design system nterview. then other cultures fit interviews for like two stages.
