      Backend Developer Interview

      22 Nov 2015
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Tsuen Wan
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through other source. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at AfterShip (Tsuen Wan) in Apr 2014

      Interview

I was given a code test focused on using beanstalkd with node.js before the in-person interview. The code test wasn't hard at all, but it takes time to go through the documentation to understand the protocol to do it right. I failed to provide a solution that follows the protocol, I was also told that very few has come up with a correct solution to that particular problem. The in-person interview was a rather relaxed conversation with the CEO around topics on the professional and technical aspects. He gave me a somewhat mixed feeling about himself. On one hand he is surely a capable, successful leader who knows exactly what he is doing and will certainly lead his company well. On the other hand, he gave me a thin feeling of disrespect and intimidation that prevented me from expressing my thought naturally. That being said, I was guilty for preparing very poorly for the interview myself. It might be unfairly prejudiced.

      Thank you for your feedback.

We have learnt a lot, still continuously learning and always striving for improvements.

We have updated our processes, shortened the length of time required, updated some of the questions as well as the coding test, invited additional members of staff to join the interviews to a promote group-based discussions and last but not least, improved communications with regards to what to expect from the beginning as well as next steps.

We hope this will help AfterShip make a pleasant first impression.
