      Sales Associate/Cashier Interview

      2 Jun 2016
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Northville, MI
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied in-person. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Bed Bath & Beyond (Northville, MI) in May 2016

      Interview

I applied in-store for a part-time position. They had a big 'now hiring' sign outside, and a smaller one inside with a bins for picking up an application / submitting the completed one. They didn't actually have any applications in the bin, so I went to customer service to ask--they were a bit rude about it and snapped at me that 'the applications are right over THERE' before I had even finished a sentence, and got huffier when I explained that I was aware of the bins but they appeared to be out. (Should have been warning sign #1, I guess.) They kept me waiting 15 minutes while someone somewhere found an application form since no one seemed to know where they were. I filled out the form in an empty corner of the store--pretty standard application form with your basic info, spaces to fill out your past work experiences, references, availability, and skills. I turned it in a few minutes later and customer service radioed for a manager to interview me immediately. That interview was five minutes and super casual--we sat in the lawn chairs nearby and he asked me to clarify some of the work I'd done in previous retail / customer service jobs (7+ years, for a reference point), told me I had a lot of what they were looking for and they really needed to hire people as they were understaffed, asked if I would be comfortable in something more intensive like wedding registries, etc. When that was done he said he'd schedule an interview with his supervisor. The second interview with the other supervisor actually ended up being right then, in his office. It seemed to go all right from my end at first--the questions were fairly standard, a lot of them repeats from the first interview. The only thing I didn't like was that when he asked if I had any questions, he seemed really thrown off by the fact that I had several, even though the things I asked were pretty basic ("What's training like?" "Are there opportunities to eventually move to full-time / move up with the company?" "What do you like best / what are the biggest challenges about working here?" etc.). In the end he said he'd love to have me on board and had absolutely no problems with my qualifications, although he did bring up that I had put ~$10 as starting wage and they could only start at $9. I said I was flexible, and he acted like that was fine and even said he'd call corporate to see if they'd be able to give me closer to $10, and that he'd call me early next week (I applied on a Thursday). I never heard back from them, of course. I got notifications that different people up the BB&B chain were looking at my LinkedIn profile, but never got the phone call and they acted magically unaware of my existence when I tried to contact them for a follow up.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Why do you want to work for Bed Bath & Beyond? Describe some of the customer service work you've done before. Are you familiar with cashiering systems? Are you able to lift over 25 pounds? What are some important questions to ask customers so you know you're giving them good service? Would you be comfortable working in the bridal / wedding registries department?

      Interview

3 questions. My feeling was that they just want a warm body. Stocking and cashier work. Minimum wage. They asked me if I go to the bathroom a lot... Apparently they were having issues with that. Thought was odd, declined offer. I will go to the bathroom whenever I like to, thank you very much.
