      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      28 Feb 2022
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at C.H. Robinson

      Interview

I was invited to an in-person technical interview after applying as a Senior Software Engineer after talking to a recruiter and agreeing on a reasonable salary range. I was put in a room with 3 people (2 general developers and one supposed database focused person) and asked how I'd design software for an online store. I asked for a little guidance about what they'd like me to focus on, as far as APIs vs database schema vs user experience. I was basically told just 'start wherever', so I started with the database. The "database guy" tried to call out my design as incorrect and I told him that I disagreed and why, and the other developers sided with me. After I felt like we'd talked about the database too long, I asked if they wanted me to switch to the APIs and business logic. They basically said okay, but that basically made me think they didn't really know what they were doing; they either didn't know what they wanted to hear about to see if I was a fit for the job, or they did know but wanted me to be in charge of figuring it out and proving it. The next call I got from the recruiter said they wouldn't hire Senior Devs externally, because they almost always want those to be internal promotions. Next, she said that the salary range would max at ~5k less than we'd previously discussed. I declined their next "opportunity" to interview.
