I applied online. The process took 3 days. I interviewed at Clear Vision Productions (Hamden, CT) in Aug 2014
Interview
I interviewed for an internship position with this company to fulfill my senior year graduation requirement. The business itself was difficult to find as it’s an odd building setup, but once I did I was greeted and met with the owner. I found her to be nice and she asked the general interview questions.
Less than midway through my interview, a man walks in to join our conversation. He sits down next to me, make a crude joke to the owner and sticks his feet up on her desk. I try to keep a straight disposition and keep going with explaining myself. At some point, the man, whose position I don’t remember, tells me that I’ll be learning how to answer phones, make phone calls and how I’ll be required to attend events. Nothing about working with graphic design.
When I finally got to explaining my portfolio, there were comments made about one particular illustration that was a class assignment. The digital illustration was a series of expressions, one of which depicted fear. I was told that because of this fearful illustration, I must be a fearful person who is afraid to learn. Excuse me, what? This was a class assignment I had no say over, and it was unfortunate they could not have seen the more positive pieces to relate to.
A couple hours after my interview, I was called and offered the position. They wanted me to start an entire month prior to when my professor suggested students start their internships. Ultimately I declined the position as I felt the role would be focused more on sales than actual graphic design.
