      Development Manager Interview

      14 Dec 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Declined offer
      Positive experience

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Clio in Nov 2024

      Interview

Interviewing with Clio showed me how much they value hiring "human and high performing" (their words) people. It had a number of steps (both usual and more-than-usual): recruiter screen, then a hiring manager interview with the director of this organization (60 minutes on my technical background and what I was looking for), programming (60 minutes of solving a straightforward problem using my own development environment), system design (60 minutes of designing a system to solve a particular problem on Zoom whiteboarding), a people leadership interview (90 minutes with an HRBP), a culture screen (45 minutes with a senior director about what drives me and why I do what I do), and then finally 60 minutes with the hiring manager again to follow up on questions they had. Though the process was in-depth and I didn't end up accepting their offer, I was incredibly impressed with Clio: their values came out through the whole process, and everyone I spoke to radiated humanity above all else. They were also incredibly accommodating of my timelines due to having another offer in hand.

      Question 1

Tell me about a time you had to exit someone due to poor performance. What steps did you take? How did you try to get them to level up?

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Clio

      Interview

The first screening with the recruiter was nicely paced and entertaining. The recruiter was very attentive during the whole process. The second interview was more of a cultural interview with a peer who was very professional and kind. Very enjoyable conversation with this person and I left the meeting with a very good impression of the company. I seriously felt like I wanted to work and learn from this person. For the 2nd round, they asked for my availability, which was supposed to take 3.5 hours. They booked a total of 4 interviews for a total of 4 hours, spread across timeslots where I had clearly stated I wasn't available. - One was supposed to be a mix of pair programming where I had to write a console application in a language of my choice. - Another was a technical deep dive into a past project. There were very specific instructions about this one, like no presentations, the type of project, among other things. - Then a 90-minute panel with 3 very senior people about people leadership. - Finally a meeting with a VP for what looked like a cultural interview. I withdrew my application as I didn't have the time to go through all of this and found the fact that they booked the interviews outside of my available time slots very rude.

      Question 1

Very generic cultural questions and go through my experience
