The initial interview was one-on-one and very generic. The interviewer asked about previous experience, why I was applying for the job and my goal in 5 years. After that, she invited me for the second interview. According to her, usually, candidates would wait around 2 weeks before being called for a second interview but she offered me right away because she was impressed.
The second interview was for a full day and included shadowing. First, we had a group interview with general questions like why you are applying for the position and previous experience in sales and marketing. A short presentation was given by the interviewer after which she played a motivational speech video for the candidates while she left the room. After the video, we were each assigned to shadow team leaders for the day who would rate us at the end of the day. Then came the shocker, it was a door to door sales job and they didn't think to mention that until after the presentation. I actually pitied some of the girls that wore heels.
We were driven in teams of 4 or 6 first to eat lunch at a restaurant, an expense I did not plan to have because I packed my lunch. also, no accommodations were made to eat packed lunch. During lunch the team leads talked about how they earned thousands of dollars each week and how they would be going on some exotic group vacation offered to outstanding employees that we would get a change to compete for once we joined the company.
Then we were driven to the designated location where each team of 2, interviewee and team lead headed off separately. We went from door to door and I watched the team lead go from wanting to measure energy usage of the home furnaces to lying about how some "unusually high energy" consumption has been detected in the house and how we would like to measure the energy usage of the furnace and offer a solution. I was disgusted at the blatant lie as the company literally just sends them out to residential areas to sell their services. I also asked her how much was the pay of which she replied that she earns around $3000 a week, obviously a lie. I couldn't stand going door to door for 7 hours so, after 2 hours or so, I just told the team lead that I had an emergency and had to leave. She said she had to evaluate me quickly after which to my surprise, she immediately offered me the job. It was only then I realized that all the interviewees would most likely be offered the job because it was basically exploitation of labour. After consulting with a few friends, we concluded that the job was probably commission based but I had to be sure as the company always evaded the topic of pay/salary. I received a phone call from the team lead on my would be first day of work to remind me to come in. Then I asked about the pay and was told that the pay was based solely on commission. Therefore, you can spend 7 hours a day going from door to door and not get paid a cent if you didn't make any sales. How terrible is that? I quickly informed her that I would not be accepting the offer. I also suspect that the team leads were offered commissions if they were able to convince us to take the job hence all the lies, talk of extravagance and bogus weekly pay. In short, this job is in fact a sham and modern day exploitation in disguise.
