      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      31 Oct 2022
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Phoenix, AZ
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at Emergent Software (Phoenix, AZ) in Oct 2022

      Interview

I filled an application and a day later got asked to do an assessment test. This was my first time ever doing anything like this and was NOTHING I was expecting. I made the mistake of trying to do this shortly after waking up on the weekend, while drinking my first cup of coffee. HUGE mistake. You need to have your A-game on as the test does NOT give you time to be thoughtful about your answers and the questions are challenging. The last question is a tech question and more like what I was expecting. But I blew it by having to do a small search. It allows you to have an IDE loaded but web search is completely off limits. You have to rely on MS hints so if you can't remember a function, your SOL. Which I was. It's 100% from memory or hint from IDE. Fair is fair. I messed up. My nerves were rattled by bombing the first 3 sections and by the time I got to the last part I had lapse of memory on something very basic. They are looking for people with ice in their veins that do not crack and can blast right answers without a thought. For me this is not a fit, I'm more thoughtful individual and prefers to double check my work. If that is you as well, go ahead and try. They seem like a pretty cool company. Just be prepared.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

First section is cupcake questions. Describe yourself. Second section (Let the destruction begin) problem solving. They will ask you riddles mostly using time schedules to solve. WATCH THE CLOCK! You only have a few seconds to answer. Third section is spacial. I scored off the charts in a real IQ test. I ran out of time here. The problems are small images that are hard to decipher. A big monitor is REQUIRED. I made a mistake here too and used a laptop. Again WATCH THE CLOCK. Forth section is tech question. This is actually the easiest part of the test. Just you do have to do it from IDE hints and memory ONLY. If you weren't wrecked from the previous sections, you will have no problem here.

      Application

      I interviewed at Emergent Software

      Interview

It’s a multi-stage interview with automated and virtual activities ranging from IQ tests to English tests, which is a bit strange in the age of AI. Then there’s a Take Home test followed by a technical interview. In the end, they told me I wasn’t the right fit because my stack didn’t fully meet the requirements. They should have screened that out before all these steps. If you want to go through this process, think carefully about it.

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Emergent Software (Minneapolis, MN) in May 2025

      Interview

The interview process was very thorough. I felt like I was able to accurately show my skills and knowledge with the combination of online assessments and technical interviews. I received no surprises during the process and it was all explained very well and directly via the careers page and recruiter. The coding challenge was straight forward but also allowed a lot of flexibility in approach and discussion which I greatly appreciated. I felt it struck the right balance for being demonstrative of skills without requiring an overly cumbersome time investment from the interviewee.
