      Senior Network Engineer Interview

      2 Oct 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      South Jordan, UT
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through other source. The process took 3 days. I interviewed at Executech (South Jordan, UT) in Dec 2018

      Interview

I interviewed with a company that was using Executech as their current IT Provider and was looking to develop an in house IT Team as it made more sense to them with recent growth and need for support in several different areas requiring many different roles. After my in house interview, I was asked to show up at Executech for them to interview me. Once I showed up I was given a packet and asked to configure a Sonicwall Firewall and a Windows Domain controller with several different needs. The frustrating part about this, is that their SonicWall Firewall failed on me twice requiring a reset each time. Secondly, I'm not a SonicWall Engineer and hadn't touched a SonicWall Firewall in 10 years. I have a heavy Cisco background with certifications a long with certs from Fortinet and Palo Alto. That is besides the point. The point is being is I think there were other ways of going about helping in hiring for a client the right candidate and testing someones knowledge. Giving me a broken lab and grading me on something that doesn't even work made this to be one thing and one thing only. A complete waste of time. There's other way of testing someones knowledge and getting a really good thorough understanding of someones experience and expertise in a simple conversation and asking the right questions. If I had asked one of these two guys in the room watching over my shoulder as I was about ready to bust that Sonicwall firewall over my knee and started asking them questions about BGP like; What is the Administrative distance of BGP? What is Any Transport over MPLS (AToM)? Does it require VRF or BGP-VPN to form AToM connectivity? Anyways, I just didn't feel like Executech was even remotely qualified to interview for the Senior Network Engineer position I had applied for. It would of just been fun to talk to a team of other Network Engineers and got down to the nitty-gritty of understanding protocols and troubleshooting in different situations and theories. Instead, I was handed a broken Sonicwall Firewall without any conversation. Thank you Executech.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

They didn't ask me any questions. They gave me a packet to setup a Sonicwall Firewall with a particual configuration which was a very basic configuration. They also wanted me to setup a Windows AD server with certain permissions which really wasn't even relevant to the position. This is their routine process for their internal hiring.
