      Sales Trainee/Outside Sales Representative Interview

      8 Apr 2011
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Deland, FL
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Fastenal (Deland, FL) in Apr 2011

      Interview

I applied online, and had a phone interview with the district manager 5 days later, where I briefly summarized my driving record. I went for a face to face interview 5 days after that, where I revealed in explicit detail my entire driving record for the past three years: I had two speeding tickets, both of which were from driving on the interstate the same speed as cars around me. I told him the speeds, the locations, and that I'd taken driving school, and he assured me that my record was fine, and that other employees had much worse infractions on their records, including accidents. A week after this (4 days longer than I was told to expect), the general manager of the store to which I applied called me in for a second interview. She had worked for Fastenal for 6 months, been promoted to general manager, but had never conducted an interview before. I was again questioned about my driving record. The manager even admitted that my record was better than her's, and that I shouldn't worry about being disqualified for it. The next day I received a call from the general manager, telling me I got the job, but that I needed to submit my driving record. I waited at the DMV, hand-delivered my record, and received a fourth conformation that it was beyond acceptable. I was scheduled to start the following Monday, and made preparations to do so. The next day I received my final call from the general manager, telling me that the district manager (who assured me from the beginning that my driving record was fine), did NOT feel that they should hire me based on my record. Obviously, this was a LIE. I wasted three weeks, reorganized my schedule, was denied employment for an unknown reason, and made to think my driving record was to blame. I wish I'd brought my driving record to the first interview, not so I'd be disqualified sooner (I wouldn't have been), but so I might discern the Actual reason for Fastenal's rejection after 3 weeks, 4 reviews of my records, and 3 outstanding interviews. My advice? Get a copy of your driving record, and bring it to your first interview. Then they won't have anything to blame when they decided they don't want to hire you for other reasons...
