      Devops Engineer Interview

      17 Dec 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Oakville, ON
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 7 weeks. I interviewed at Geotab (Oakville, ON) in Nov 2018

      Interview

Process started with an online application, followed by a very bizarre 30 question personality aptitude test. This was followed up several weeks later with a call-interview by their hiring agent. Several weeks later, a very in-depth personal interview was held at their offices. Unfortunately, this is where the interview process went awry. After the in-person interview, I was scheduled in to write (validated by their email) an 8 hour long programming test! The hiring agent failed to notify me that it was not an in person test, and had me come to their office. I validated this and confirmed the time and place prior to heading for the interview. Upon arriving at their offices to write the test, I was informed it was an out-of-office test. They wanted me to set up my own testing environment and they refused to push back my test start time as a result of their error. Thus, my 8 hour test started with my commuting back to my residence (in another city) - unfortunately it took me far longer than expected since i had plans after the interview that i had to attend. I was able to start the test at 10pm and completed it at 2am. They did not provide a test environment and I had to expend my own cloud credits to configure a test environment where i could write the test (Google cloud Platform - producing scripts). I completed the script, however I had to cut corners as a result of being exhausted. They told me they would get back to me the following monday, but failed to respond to me until the monday following that monday. Overall, I have had a questionably legal experience interviewing with this company. This has been hands down the worst series of interviews i have ever had with any company. Excessively long test (that may have been free work?), awful feedback, scheduling errors on behalf of the recruiting agents and no slack given for their own errors. In the end, i was not given an offer as they were going with other candidates, which i believe to be unfair unless they were also tested under the same circumstances. Let this be a warning for any future candidates applying.

      Question 2

Part 2 Create a Powershell script, newGceInstance.ps1 which will do the following: Create a new GCE instance from the Windows 2012 R2 base Image Create a local admin account on the server Create a remote powershell session to the instance Copy svrInfo.ps1 from your local machine onto the instance Run the svrInfo.ps1 script on the instance and write the output to the user's screen Configure a scheduled task on the instance which will run svrInfo.ps1 on server startup and direct output to a local text file. Close the Remote PS session and write a message to the user’s console indicating that the script completed successfully. This script must take the following parameters from the user: InstanceName - Name of the GCE instance to create GceProject - Name of the GCP project where the instance is created GceZone - Name of the GCP zone where the instance is created Script - Location of svrInfo.ps1 on the user’s local machine The script should gracefully fail and output a clear message to the user in the event that the instance already exists in the project.
