      Designer Interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Grace and Lace (Austin, TX) in Nov 2020

      Interview

Unprofessional and shady. I applied for a full time position they reached back out and had me go through their hoola hoops only to throw a curve ball at me mid phone interview conversation (which she was late for/unprepared for) and say they were interested in a freelancer now because "business needs changed". I understand business needs change, but they way it was handled was completely inappropriate. They then requested I still complete the design test which is typical for a full time position/opportunity to offset risk of hiring a full time employee- but this practice for a freelancer is not only not industry standard but technically illegal as contract employees work for pay. You don't give a plumber a practice test to consider hiring them for future gigs that pay, contract designers should be treated with the same respect for their work/services. Also a contract is there for a reason to ensure the freelancer provides the requested service for the business thus eliminating any "need" to test the designer for their capabilities which is the only reason this practice is legal in hiring process for full/part time regular non-contract employees. Seems like they were just looking to cut corners and hire people as a freelancer/contractor basically improperly classifying them as that to avoid paying/providing various benefits or ensure laws/rights that are normally protected for non contract employees. I reached out again to try and confirm further what was going on and give them the benefit of the doubt as again I understand business needs change or maybe there was miscommunication or pure intentions but I was ignored so.... Yeah very unprofessional and frankly suspicious experience. I hope they change their hiring practices or get caught with TWC if they are purposefully/knowingly engaging in illegal hiring/employment practices as this type of behavior is destructive and unethical!

      Question 1

Make a trend Page for FW21 Come up with 3 full looks for FW21 (looks can be done by hand or illustrator and they can be fashion sketches or flats but should be filled with color/fabric/print and not black and white) Do a illustrator flat and make a tech pack based on one item from your full looks.

Thank you so much for sharing your feedback with us, we take every comment very seriously to make internal changes to improve. I'm sorry that your interview wasn't a positive experience and no one ever got back to you. We receive tons of applicants for various positions daily and do our best to respond to everyone in a timely manner, however, we're not perfect and sometimes make mistakes. We're working to improve our response time to ensure all candidates hear back from us. We're always working to improve our hiring process to find the best candidates for Grace and Lace and to make it a pleasant experience for applicants. Change is constant in our business, and we ask our team members to be incredibly nimble in an ever-changing, fast-paced environment. As for the test projects, we ask applicants to complete a test project to ensure that this would be a good fit for both the company and the candidate. We don't ever use these projects for anything other than to review qualifications and job fit. While the other comments are either misconceptions or are pure opinions with which we simply disagree, we really appreciate your feedback. Thank you for taking the time to leave this review. We wish you all the best in your career!
